Juana Duran Alvarez

Juana Duran Suarez Alvarez, 91, passed away peacefully with family by her side on August 4, 2023, at her home in Winder, GA. “Nana,” as she was affectionately known, has gone home to join her husband of 63 years, Pio Alvarez, and her two sorely missed daughters. She was one of nine children born to Pablo Duran and Candelaria Suarez on September 20, 1931, in Havana, Cuba, all whom she loved dearly.

Nana immigrated to the United States in 1968, alongside her husband and two youngest sons, settling in Atlanta, GA to finish raising their family. Nana was a dedicated homemaker of the highest order, often doing without so her children might have a better life in this country than she had. A Jehovah’s Witness by faith and matriarch in every way imaginable, Nana’s heart served as the moral compass of our family.

Nana’s essence was one of unconditional love, loving immensely with all of her being—her eyes, arms, heart, and soul. She clung tightly to her Cuban roots, which shaped her frugal yet empathetic ways, religiously sending money to help her family in Cuba. She overcame life's storms with strength and grace, while funneling the love she lost into future generations. She served as a divine conduit through which her descendants were afforded the American dream. She was feisty, lively, and deceivingly strong given her small stature. She was a fun-loving and witty humorist sharing jokes as a mutual opportunity to laugh together. Her family was her world—evident in the way she nurtured so many and how she joyfully re-lived life's memories through her highly treasured photos.

Nana was preceded in death by her husband Pio Alvarez; her daughters: Odalis and Rosa Maria; her parents; and siblings: Elena, Josefina, Manuel, Jose, and Ignacio.

She is survived by her four sons: Pio Eladio (Marlene) Alvarez, Rolando Emilio (Mislaidys) Alvarez, Jorge Luis Alvarez, Esteban (Tina) Alvarez; and daughter figure Ramona Alvarez, who remains integral to the family. Her 13 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren, and 1 great-great grandchild include: Roxana Maria Alvarez (Jorge)—Kelly, Wendy. Evelyn Strickland—Brandon Shane, Shannon Penelope. Odalis Cynthia Maddox (Barry)—Triston Lee Gann, Brandon Mateo Fowler. Eliezer Alvarez (Wanda). Yecenia Rosa Alvarez (Aggeo)—Gwendolyn, Haggai. Jorman Marquez Alvarez (Elena)—Michael Jorman (Isabela); Chael Lucas Alvarez. Rolando C. Alvarez (Erin)—Anna Thomason, Jackson and Gabriel Alvarez. Joel Pio Alvarez (Yanira). Steven Duran Alvarez (Jennifer). Rosa Maria Alvarez. Lewiselyn. Sofiely Helem. George Junior.

She is also survived by her sisters Marta and Sulima, brother Ramon, half-brothers Pablo and Carlos, step-siblings Vicente, Orlando, and Soila Estrella Rojas. Nana will be deeply missed by all.

The memorial service for Juana Duran Alvarez will be held on August 10, 2023, at Smith Funeral Home, 755 Atlanta Hwy SE, Winder, GA 30680. Visitation will be held at 1pm and the funeral service at 2pm. Burial will follow at Barrow Memorial Gardens (beside Smith Funeral Home), 793 Atlanta Hwy SE, Winder, GA 30680.

Juana Duran Suarez Alvarez, 91, falleció pacíficamente con su familia a su lado el 4 de agosto, 2023 en su casa en Winder, Georgia. “Nana”, como se le conocía cariñosamente, descansa ahora con su esposo de 63 años, Pio Alvarez, y sus dos hijas quien extrañaba mucho. Ella era una de nueve hijos de Pablo Duran y Candelaria Suarez el 20 de septiembre de 1931 en La Habana, Cuba. Amaba intensamente a sus padres y hermanos.

Nana emigró a los Estados Unidos en 1968 con su esposo y dos hijos menores. Se establecieron en Atlanta, Georgia para criar su familia y era una ama de casa dedicada que frecuentemente hacia sacrificios para que sus hijos tuvieran una mejor vida en este país que la que ella había experimentado. Nana, quien observaba la fe de los Testigos de Jehová, era una matriarca en todo sentido con un corazón que servía de brújula moral para nuestra familia.

El amor de Nana era incondicional. Amaba con todo lo que tenía – sus ojos, brazos, corazón, y toda su alma. Estaba aferrada a sus raíces cubanas, que formaban su forma de ser frugal pero empática, ya que enviaba dinero regularmente para ayudar a su familia en Cuba. Superó las tormentas de su vida con fuerza y gracia mientras dirigía cualquier amor que había perdido a generaciones futuras. Ella sirvió como un conducto a través del cual sus descendientes llegaron a conocer el “sueño americano”. Era una mujer de lucha, de ánimo, y engañosamente fuerte dada su pequeña estatura. A Nana le encantaba divertirse y a cada rato compartía chistes para crear oportunidades de reírse con otros. Su familia era su mundo y era evidente al ver como crio a tantos y volvía a vivir sus memorias a través de sus fotos atesoradas.

Fallecidos antes de Nana son su esposo Pio Alvarez, sus hijas Odalis y Rosa María, sus padres, y sus hermanos Elena, Josefina, Manuel, José, e Ignacio.

Le sobreviven sus cuatro hijos: Pio Eladio (Marlene) Alvarez, Rolando Emilio (Mislaidys) Alvarez, Jorge Luis Alvarez, Esteban (Tina) Alvarez; y Ramona Alvarez, considerada como una hija, quien permanece como parte integral de la familia. Sus 13 nietos, 12 bisnietos, y 1 tataranieto incluyen: Roxana Maria Alvarez (Jorge)—Kelly, Wendy. Evelyn Strickland—Brandon Shane, Shannon Penelope. Odalis Cynthia Maddox (Barry)—Triston Lee Gann, Brandon Mateo Fowler. Eliezer Alvarez (Wanda). Yecenia Rosa Alvarez (Aggeo)—Gwendolyn, Haggai. El servicio fúnebre para Juana Duran Alvarez se llevará a cabo el 10 de agosto, 2023 en Smith Funeral Home, 755 Atlanta Hwy SE, Winder, GA 30680. Se podrá visitar a la familia a la 1pm y el discurso de servicio se pronunciará a las 2pm. El entierro seguirá en Barrow Memorial Gardens (al lado del hogar fúnebre), 793 Atlanta Hwy SE, Winder, GA 30680.
