

Margaret "Peggy" McDonald Smith passed away July 21, 2025 at Haven Memory Care in Athens, GA. She was born on October 13, 1939 in Montgomery, AL. Peggy grew up in Abbeville, SC and moved to Winder, GA the summer of 1957. She graduated from Winder-Barrow High School in 1958 and married James Ottis Smith on July 3, 1959. She was a loving wife, mother, and homemaker. Peggy worked part-time at Peskin's Department Store as a sales clerk and later worked in the offices of Carwood Manufacturing and Mr. B's Oil Company. When she retired from public work, she grew broiler chickens for Harrison Poultry Company.
Peggy was preceded in death by her parents, James Thomas McDonald and Margaret Evans McDonald; and all her siblings: Betty Tanner, James "Sonny" McDonald, Sue Malone, and Thomas McDonald. She is survived by her husband James Ottis Smith of Winder; her daughter Merry Elizabeth "Beth" Smith of Winder; her son Dr. James Keith Smith of Carrollton, GA; and several nieces and nephews.
Her family expresses their appreciation to Tom Price of Visiting Angels and his caregiver staff of Tammy Bindschusz, Rachel Abraham, Judy Mooney, and Mindy Crawshaw. Also, to Lisa Brown and her staff at Haven Memory Care in Athens, GA, and finally to Family Hospice and their hospice nurses and especially Katie Wilkes.
A memorial service will be held Saturday, July 26 at 1:30 pm at the First Christian Church of Winder, 275 North 5th Avenue. Visitation will be at the church prior to the service from 11 am to 1 pm.
In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the First Christian Church of Winder.
