Michael Ross Harper, Sr.

Michael Ross Harper, Sr., of Winder, GA passed away peacefully at home on October 24, 2023 surrounded by the love of his family. Born October 6, 1939 in Jesup, GA, the son of Rita Bowen Harper and James Lee Harper, Mike grew up in Jesup, GA. After graduating high school, Mike attended the Citadel in Charleston, SC where he maintained a 4.0 average and graduated with honors. Mike met the love of his life, Janette Grace Gould, while in attendance at the Citadel. Mike and Janette were married in 1961. They went on to have five children.

Upon graduation from the Citadel, Mike was a commissioned Officer in the United States Army and served his country proudly. He was stationed in Nuremberg, Germany and was a sharpshooter. Mike returned to the United States in 1965 where he remained in the Army Reserves for many years and retired a full Colonel. Mike worked for Southern Bell for many years where he held business management positions throughout his career. After retirement, Mike worked for the Georgia Dept. of Revenue until he officially retired.

Mike was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers: James Harper and Richard (Mansie) Harper; and his beloved Aunt Beadie (Vera Doering). Mike is survived by his wife Janette Harper of Winder GA; children: Rita Harper (Rick Lammons) of Jefferson, GA, Kathleen Harper Lasky (Stephen Lasky) of Wexford, PA, Heidi Harper of Statham, GA, Michael Harper Jr. (Carolyn Harper) of Columbia, SC, and Stephen Harper (Lynn Harper) of Winder, GA; 13 grandchildren and one great granddaughter; brother, Robert Harper (Diane Harper) of Myrtle Beach, SC; and his lifelong friend and favorite cousin, Charles (Dill) Harper of Ponte Verde, FL.

The family wishes to thank Agape Hospice for the wonderful care Mike received and specifically Jessica Daniel, Mike's caretaker.

A private service will be held by the family. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association.
