Rick was the consummate gentleman. He was always kind, thoughtful, and had a great sense of humor! I thoroughly enjoyed our conversations throughout the years.

When I graduated from college, Rick and his lovely wife Irma invited me to Germany with my great aunts Helen and Marion (his mother).
We had the best of times "castle hopping", visiting relatives in Nuremberg, and  enjoying a wonderful week on the banks of Lake Como, Italy. I extended the trip with a couple of college friends around Europe and Rick was later instrumental in securing jobs for us in Bavaria.  Those travel experiences greatly enriched my life and I'll always be grateful to Rick for his guidance and for helping to make it all possible. 

My mother Dottie always considered Rick like her brother and he became a dear friend and pal of my Dad (Robert). I am picturing Rick in heaven with his beloved wife Irma along with my parents -laughing and having a great time as they always did.

My heartfelt sympathy goes to Mike and Colleen at this time.

I am so sorry Rick has passed.  He was consistently a patient, kind and loving person with a great sense of humor.   He will be missed.  

I found this photograph of Rick in a tin box my mother gave me.  I believe this picture was sent by Rick to his mother, to show her,  his new rank.  What a proud moment for the both of them.

Rick was my mother’s  cousin.  As a youth, he spent time with Dottie, her siblings and my grandmother, Agnes, who he fondly called Arnie. He was loved by that family to include my grandfather, Donald. The family would travel to Maine in the summer and enjoy the fresh air & blueberries. In later years, Rick shyly said  “You know, Donald & Arnie wished they could keep me". (Smile). But, he chuckled, " Your mother and Shirley would run away from me because I was younger and a boy”! 
My dad, Robert Thistle, thought of Rick as a brother and admired his decorated career service. They enjoyed each other’s company and conversations. They talked on a monthly basis and Rick would email his favorite jokes. 
Rick had a presence and panache both in person or on the phone. His sensitivity, interest and gentle humor was consistent. His mother, Marion, my loving godmother, shared that ability to focus and be kind. She was so proud of Rick’s service &  would  glowingly show me pictures of our extended German family. Living in the Boston area, she later moved to Columbus when the family transferred. 
My mother and father celebrated Rick’s and family visits to New England and Florida. We have wonderful pictures of those times. 
Since my parents passing, I talked with Rick as the " spirit moved us". Sometimes, he would catch me on errands and I would be talking for nearly an hour at the post-office parking lot or somewhere. I liked to call Rick , "one of my favorite veterans”, on Veteran’s Day and some Memorial Days. I was thinking of him on the 27th.
How wonderful during these last years, Rick & Irma were nearby in Lawrenceville to Michael and Colleen . Michael & Colleen championed coordination of Rick’s care and needs. They provided loving support during the passing of Irma. 
Irma and Rick were such a handsome and hospitable couple in their Columbus home.  Now, they will be home together again.

We are so  sorry Mike and Colleen for the loss of Rick. He was a sweet, and kind neighbor and  friend for almost 40 years. He and  Irma were like family to us as being also a military family  we bonded and took care of each other. He was always eager to lend a helping hand .  When we moved to Columbus Ga to be stationed at Fort Benning  our children were little and they loved visiting the Burroughs and when the grandchildren come along I would make sure  to have  them visit Mr Rick and Miss Erma. , They always had a little surprise for them. ( a piece of chocolate).  He will be truly missed. May he rest in peace.  God bless   Love and prayers, Robert  and Amelia Perez and Family
