1940-2015
On July 8, Albert passed away in Winnipeg after suffering complications from cancer. He is survived by his loving wife of forty-nine years, Nettie (Spurling) Labun; his children, Inonge, Paul and Michael; as well as nine grandchildren, Jessica, Makaria, Nikolas, Malakia, Mikayla, Joseph, Sarah, Samuel and Sophia.
Albert grew up on the farm in southern Manitoba where he learned the value of teamwork and stewardship of the land. His formal education began in a one-room school house, after which he attended Winkler Collegiate. In 1960, he obtained a B.A. and B.Ed from the University of Manitoba. Albert’s teaching career began at the high school in Portage La Prairie. He later held teaching positions in Zambia, Stoke-on-Trent and Transcona.
In Zambia he met Nettie Spurling, a teacher from England. They married in 1965 and moved to Winnipeg, settling in the Wolseley neighbourhood where they raised three children. From 1976-79, the family lived in England and Albert studied the use of drama in education, obtaining a post-graduate diploma in education at Newcastle University, and an M.A. from Durham University.
In 1985, Albert became General Director of Manitoba Pioneer Camp where he served until 2003. For many years, Albert was a member of Fort Garry MB Church where he developed many close friendships. In the 2000s, he began attending the Grain of Wheat Church Community.
Albert is greatly missed by his family and friends but his love for others will continue to serve as an inspiration. The family would like to thank the staff at the Health Science Centre and Cancer Care for their kindness.
Funeral Services will be held on Friday, July 17, 2015 at 10:30 am, at Fort Garry Mennonite Brethren Church, 1771 Pembina Hwy, Winnipeg, Manitoba.
