On June 18, 2016 Alf went to be with his Heavenly Father after a courageous battle with leukemia.
He will be lovingly remembered by his wife Marlene; children Michelle (Cameron) McCartney, Chris (Lorinda) Huebert; grandchildren Myla, Alayna and Kaylie McCartney, and Samuel and Isobel Huebert; brothers Dennis (Judy) Huebert and Tim (Karen) Huebert; and many in-laws, nieces and nephews and friends.
He was predeceased by his parents, John and Mary Huebert, and son, Philip Huebert.
Alfred Huebert was born January 24, 1942 in Waldheim, Saskatchewan to John and Mary Huebert and grew up in rural Saskatchewan in the Waldheim area, north of Saskatoon. As a young child, Alf became a follower of Jesus, was baptized at age 16 in the North Saskatchewan River and joined the Mennontie Brethren Brotherfield Church. From his youth onward, he used the Bible as the guide to how he should live his life. A favorite Scripture was Jeremiah 29:11, “For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.”
An essay Alf wrote during high school on Mahatma Gandhi inspired him to become a lawyer. Alf wanted to make a difference in his world. After attending Bethany Bible Institute in Hepburn, SK for one year, he went on to university and obtained both a Bachelor of Arts degree and a Bachelor of Laws degree in 1968 from University of Saskatchewan. Alf carried on the private practice of Law in the City of Saskatoon for twenty-two years, working in the areas of corporate and commercial law, land law, estate planning and estate administration. He acted as legal counsel for churches and charitable organizations and found deep fulfillment in helping people with few resources out of difficult situations.
In 1968 Alf married Marlene Buller, and started a family a few years later. A daughter, Michelle, was born in 1971; a son, Christopher, in 1974; and a second son, Phillip, in 1977. His children brought him much joy and family holidays to the lake were always a highlight of the year. To the family’s sorrow, Philip passed away at the age of 18 months.
Alf was blessed to have great relationships with extended family and friends. Active physical adventures as well as challenging philosophical discussions were equally enjoyed.
In 1992 Alf moved to Winnipeg and became the Director of Stewardship for the Canadian Conference of Mennonite Brethren Churches. His work involved assisting individuals and churches with stewardship instruction, will preparation and estate planning, as well as personal financial planning. He enjoyed his travels, particularly meeting new people and assisting them. He had a special way with the elderly and was able to clarify difficult financial concepts.
Alf left the work force in 2006 to spend more time with his family, travel and pursue his many interests. His many hobbies included lapidary, golfing, reading, hiking and boating. He loved being out in nature, where he communed best with God, especially at a lake or seashore. He also enjoyed spending time with the local Gem Club and singing in the Keenagers choir in his retirement years.
Alf was known for his adventuresome spirit and was always willing to try new experiences. A bee farm in his basement, ziplining at 69 years of age and deep sea fishing were a few examples. He was an encourager who saw the good in people and expected the best from them. Alf was known for his very positive attitude: “There has to be a way” was a phrase used when he was pondering a problem. As an optimist, he believed in the best possible outcome in people and in situations.
Public visitation will take place on Thursday, June 23 from 6:45-8pm at Thomson “In the Park” Funeral Home, 1291 McGillivray Blvd, Winnipeg.
The memorial service will be held on Friday, June 24 at 1:30pm at Fort Garry Mennonite Brethren Church, 1771 Pembina Hwy, Winnipeg.
Flowers are gratefully declined due to allergies. Donations may be made to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society of Canada or to the C2C Network Canada. We would also like to express our heartfelt thanks to the Palliative Care Team and the Buhler Cancer Centre medical staff for their excellent care of Alf.
