It is with profound sadness and heavy hearts that we announce the sudden passing of our beloved Wife, Mother, Nonna and Bisnonna, Angela Maria Scarola (nee Martelli), who peacefully passed away surrounded by loved ones at the age of 86 on August 4, 2025.
Angela is lovingly remembered by her devoted husband of 68 years, Gastone; their son, Vito (Jo-Anne); granddaughters Vanessa (Daniel) and Alexandra (Micheal); six greatgrandchildren — Alice, Dahlia, Violette, Lennox, Ronan, and Stellan; and her sister, Maria. She was predeceased by her parents, Rosa and Nicola, and her brother Antonio.
Born on March 6, 1939, in the serene mountain town of Stigliano, Matera, Italy, Angela was the middle of three children. From a young age, she embraced nurturing family and perfecting her lifelong passion of cooking, baking and sewing amidst the grain fields and olive groves of her childhood home. At 15, she met the love of her life, Gastone, and together they were married on April 22, 1957. Their joy was further blessed with the arrival of their only son, Vito, the following year.
In 1967, Angela, Gastone and Vito embarked on a new chapter, immigrating to Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. Angela’s incredible talent as a seamstress paved the way for their new life. In Winnipeg, she quickly became beloved at Sterling Stall, where her radiant smile and warm spirit touched everyone she met. In 1972, the family made their home on Simcoe Street where Angela and Gastone built a lifetime of memories over the next 52 years.
With a green thumb in her garden, Angela baked fresh bread daily and her legacy of authentic Italian cuisine will live on with her family for generations to come. Our table will never be the same without her dishes that were the heart of family gatherings.
Affectionately known as “Angela’s Kitchen,” her home was a place of comfort, generosity and love — where no one left without a full stomach or heart, and a container of homemade pasta, focaccia, chicken cutlets, stuffed peppers, panzerotti, or amaretti cookies. Her kitchen was her sanctuary, and her door was always open. Whether five or ten at the table, Angela ensured everyone had their favorite meal, nourishing both stomachs and souls. She will be forever missed.
Riposa in Pace, Nonna.
Funeral services will be held at Holy Rosary Church on Wednesday August 13 2025, at 11:00 am with condolences at 10:00 am
