She leaves many behind to rejoice that she has finally found her rest and to celebrate a memorable and meaningful life. Among them: sons Bob, Scott Faris (Trish), grandchildren Rob, Katya, Curran (Bree-Ann) Faris, Brenna (Steve) Mutch, Evan Faris and great-granddaughters Aida and Ella Faris. She will be remembered by Nephew Brian (Bev) Armstrong and family, and the families of nieces Shirley Gardner, Sandy Chiupka, Marilyn (John) Wade, Carol (Gerry) Irving, as well as Carol Townsley, and the families of Susan (Steve) Laycock and Ron (Glenna) Armstrong. She will also be sadly missed by her many dear friends and neighbours. We wish to especially thank Joan Rettie and Barb Whitla, who constantly and devotedly visited her in hospital over these past months.
Dorothy was the youngest of eleven children of William and Carlotta Armstrong. She lived in the house, built by her father, for all but six of her ninety-seven years. Many tragedies occurred in her life, but they did not quench her indomitable spirit. She became a passionate Volunteer at Children’s Hospital and during over 60 years of service she accomplished great deeds. She was a founding member of the Children’s Hospital Book Market and the Peter Pan Club. She received the 1986 Teddy Award for outstanding volunteer contribution. She chaired or sat on many committees at Children’s Hospital including the Book Market, Guild Council, Guild Liaison, Research Council, and Board of Directors.
Dorothy was the recipient of the City of Winnipeg Community Service Award, and the Lottie J. Armstrong Unsung Hero Award, named in honour of her beloved sister. In 1999 her accomplishments were recognized nation-wide as she was presented with The Governor General's Caring Canadian Award.
“Gram” was a loving, compassionate, and tough woman, with a terrific sense of humour and positive attitude to life. She cherished all the recognition she received, but to her, family meant everything. She gave unstintingly of herself and leaves a great hole in our lives.
Dorothy did not want a funeral service. There will be a quiet family memorial service which will certainly include the parade she wanted.
In lieu of flowers, those who wish may make a donation to the Children’s Hospital Foundation.
We love you, a bushel and a peck… Salle á mange...
