April 10, 1920 – October 12, 2013
Dorothy passed away peacefully on Saturday, October 12, 2013 at the age of 93 with her family by her side. She was
pre-deceased by husband Ted, brothers Gordon and Hughie, half-brothers Fred and Sam and sisters Frances, Eva and Eleanor. Born and raised on a farm in Portage La Prairie, she trained as a nurse and worked briefly at the Brandon Mental Hospital. After moving to Winnipeg, she worked at Harman’s Drugstore where she met Robert (Ted) Russell whom she married in 1948.
Dorothy is survived by her three children, Linda (Mark Keedwell), and twins Mark (Donna Johnson-Russell) and Diane (Tyrone Larkin). She was blessed with five grandchildren: Laurie Larkin-Boyle, Logan Larkin, Matthew Russell, Kelly Russell and Alexander Russell and two great-grandchildren, Conrad and Lily Larkin-Boyle. She had an eye for fashion and thoroughly enjoyed her job as manager at the Madcap Boutique where she worked for a number of years. She, Ted and the children spent many happy times cruising the Red River in their boat and taking annual family camping trips to Lake of the Woods, Ontario. Once the children were grown, the couple enjoyed trips to Europe, Canada’s north and to the West Coast.
She will be remembered for her feistiness, captivating smile, and always elegant appearance. She was a strong defender of the less fortunate and preferred to focus on saying something nice about others. She was particularly appreciative of the care she received at Extendicare Tuxedo Villa Retirement Home where she was a resident for over 10 years. Her children are deeply grateful to the staff for the loving care they provided to their mom up until the end of her earthy life.
A memorial service will be held at 3:00 pm on Wednesday, October 16, 2013 at the home of Mark and Donna Johnson-Russell, 55 Battleford Bay, Winnipeg.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Extendicare Tuxedo Villa.
May her soul progress swiftly through the many worlds of God.
