1922 -2015
With love and with a deep gratitude for a life well lived, the family of Douglas Ford announces his passing at 92 years on Friday, January 16, 2015. He leaves the love of his life, wife Vera Ford, daughters, Kathy Rusnak (Dale), and Maggie Ford (Gerald Chartier), granddaughter, Meagan Rusnak (Eddie Bardana), grandson, Garrett Rusnak, and Sister-in-law, Jo Robinson.
Dad was the last surviving child of six children born to Henry and Pearl Ford. Dad spent his childhood in Winnipeg and at 19 years of age joined the Canadian Armed Forces where he served in Europe in WWII. Upon returning home to Winnipeg, he married Vera Asker and for 67 years had what some may call a fairy tale marriage. Dad worked at Stony Mountain Penitentiary where he was involved in many committees, clubs, and most importantly, headed the union where he passionately fought for the rights of peace officers in Canada. Once he retired he was fortunate to be able to call Arizona his winter home for over 25 years, and in the summer months enjoyed living at the home that he and Mom built in Grand Marais, MB. He proceeded on to what he called his “golden years”. He pursued his hobbies of building, playing golf, and learning how to use the computer, eventually becoming the computer club president. Dad was the consummate gentleman, and will be deeply missed for his love of life, sensitivity, sense of humour, and most of all his stories.
When describing his life Dad would say, “I am very pleased”.
We would like to thank the Health Care Teams at the Misericordia HC and at the Maples PCH. You cared for Dad and our family with compassion and love and we are eternally grateful to you, our heroes!
In lieu of flowers please support the Alzheimer’s Society in Dad’s name. http://www.alzheimer.mb.ca/ or 204-943-6622.
Memorial service will be held at Klassen Funeral Home, 1897 Henderson Hwy. Friday, January 23, 2015, at 10:00 AM.
