It is with deepest sorrow that we announce the passing of our beloved father, grandfather and friend Edward Omelan on May 31, 2012, on the eve of his 80th birthday. Left to cherish his memory are his children Terry, Karen (Sandy) and Craig (Anne), grandchildren Graeme and Tien, as well as long-time friend Gail Gowanlock. He is also survived by his brother Glenn (Debra), nieces Melissa and Megan, and many other relatives in Canada and the U.S. He was predeceased in 1995 by Jennie, his wife of 43 years. Dad was born on Selkirk Avenue on June 1, 1932, to Eugenia and William Omelan. At age 17, Dad joined the C.N.R. in Winnipeg and worked as a carman for 20 years. He married Jennie Grabowecky in 1951. While working and raising a family with Mom, he went back to school, achieving his Bachelor of Education and then Master of Education degrees. In 1970, Dad changed careers, becoming an English teacher at Tec Voc High School. He retired in 1995, after 25 years. Dad's interests were many and varied. He loved cars, airplanes and ships from an early age. In later years, he travelled throughout Canada, the U.S., and Europe. He enjoyed reading, especially about military history and politics. Nothing gave him more pleasure than a good conversation over a cup of strong tea. Dad was equally skilled with his hands. When it came making or fixing things, he was creative and ingenious, and always ready to help anyone who asked. Dad treasured his family, and he was the centre of our world. His kindness of spirit, generosity, and helpfulness will be sorely missed. The family wishes to thank Dad's doctors and the staff at Concordia Hospital, N3E. Viewing will be on Thursday, June 7, 2012, at 7:00 p.m. at Thompson Funeral Home on Broadway. Funeral services will be held on Friday, June 8 at 11:00 am at St. Andrew's River Heights United Church, Kingsway at Oak. If so desired, contributions in Dad's name can be made to CancerCare Manitoba or a charity of one's choice.
