Peacefully, after a courageous fight, Dad passed away on December 21st at the age of 84.
Dad is survived by his loving wife Irene, his daughter Jackie Wilkes (Paul), his daughter Donna, his son John (Cathy); grandchildren Jason, Jodie, Kyle, Mark, Sean; great-grandchildren Bailey, Camry and Karsyn. He was predeceased by his brothers Harry, Clifford, Charlie, Gordon, Hector and sisters Ann and Barbara.
Dad was born in Saskatchewan and was raised in the small town of Red Jacket. He met Irene in 1952 and in 1954 they moved to Winnipeg where they settled on Glasgow Avenue and raised their family. Dad drove for Soo-Security Motorways for 20 years and was recognized for 1.5 million miles of safe highway driving. With his inclination to help others, it was a natural fit for him to join the Teamsters Local 979 as a business agent. Due to his sense of fairness and dedication to the betterment of the workplace for his members, he repeatedly was elected to represent highway truck drivers for over 20 years.
Dad loved watching sports, especially when his children and grandchildren were playing hockey or soccer. Dad’s involvement in the Fort Rouge Soccer Club led to the development of lifelong bonds in this close-knit ‘family’.
Dad always made friends easily with his winning smile, mischievous grin and quick wit. His famous chuckle was easily and often brought out by his longtime close friend Bob Parker, with whom he enjoyed many a debate. His times with Bob were very special to him.
In retirement, Dad and Mom loved heading south to Arizona. At the Valley D’Oro Campground he renewed his love of playing pool, including annoying others by winning games while using a snooker cue.
When Mom’s Parkinson’s progressed, Dad became everything Mom needed. Later when Dad needed help, he joined Mom at Vista Park Lodge whose staff commented on his friendly teasing, gentle manner and easy smile.
The family sincerely thanks the second floor staff of Vista Park Lodge for the superb care they gave Dad during his last days. Their dedication during that difficult time was exemplary.
We love you, Dad/Grandpa/Papa. We will miss you dearly.
Memorial service will be held at Thomson “In the Park” Funeral Home, 1291 McGillivray Blvd., on Wednesday, December 28, 2011 at 2:00 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, please donate in Dad’s name to the Heart and Stroke Foundation, #200-6 Donald St. R3L 0K6, the Parkinson’s Society 302-171 Donald St. R3C 1M4, or a charity of your choice.
