

Left to mourn are his sons Terry (Heather), Teddy (Mary Anne), and Timmy; grandchildren Katherine and Tyler (Jen); stepchildren Deanne and Jamie; great grandchildren; great-step-grandchildren; sister Isabelle (Don deceased); and brother Don (Rowena).
George was predeceased by his wife Gwen of 71 years of marriage; his parents W.G. Smith and Margaret Deacon; and his sister Jean (Carl Deceased).
He will affectionately be remembered by his nieces and nephews and their spouses and families; the Thompson's, Schultz's, Hoy's, Smith's, Kenny's, and Barnes.
Dad was born in Timmins, Ontario and lived there for his first 10 years. The family moved to Aurora in 1929 where he spent 7 years. He had his first job as a paperboy and had fond memories of taking the streetcar to see the Leafs play.
They moved to South Porcupine in 1936 where Dad worked for his father in Marshall Eccelstones as a stock-boy.
Dad loved sports and played ball and hockey. He was a member of the 1936/37 South Porcupine Red Wings; coached by Carlo Catterello.
In 1941, Dad joined the Army (Royal Canadian Ordinance Corps). In February 1942, Dad found himself on a troopship heading for England. After much training Dad sailed for the Invasion of Sicily in June 1943. He then spent time in France, Belgium, Holland, and Germany before returning to Canada in December 1945.
On January 31, Dad married the Love of his Life Gwen. Then over the next 12 years the three boys arrived.
On return Dad commenced employment with Tisdale Township at the Township Garage as a stock clerk. He then worked as the Assistant Tax Collector, Assistant Welfare Officer, and then in the Assessment Office.
In 1965, Dad was one of the first staff selected to set up the first of many District Assessment offices. He quickly became the go to guy setting up and training staff in Manitoulin Island, Parry Sound, Sudbury, Sault Ste Marie, and Brockville before retiring and returning to the Soo in 1981. One last move to Winnipeg was carried out.
Dad was a volunteer fireman for 17 years. In addition he was a lifetime Legion member. He held executive positions at Branch 287 in South Porcupine and Branch 25 in Sault Ste Marie.
Dad spent the last year and a half in the Deer Lodge Centre a Veterans Home. He was looked after with great care and dignity; and we thank the staff of Tower 4 for looking after our Dad.

Dad was not supposed to leave this world till the Leafs won the Stanley Cup. For Dad "Go Leafs Go"
