It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our father and husband, Giuseppe Palumbo. Giuseppe passed away peacefully on March 18, 2017, the day of his 74th birthday, after a lengthy illness.
Giuseppe leaves behind his devoted wife of 47 years, Carmela, his two sons Mauro and Bruno (Kendra), brothers Emilio, Loreto and Luigi, and sisters Antonietta and Elisa. He was predeceased by his brother Oreste and sister Angelina.
Giuseppe was born in Montagano, Italy on March 18, 1943, the seventh of eight children to Rosina and Francesco Palumbo. Seeking better opportunities after post-war Italy, he emigrated to Canada in 1966, after six years in Switzerland, and settled in Winnipeg with his older siblings. In 1969, he married Carmela and together they commenced their Canadian adventure. Along the way, they raised a proud family through hard work, sacrifice and determination. Giuseppe worked in the construction industry his entire life, which he enjoyed greatly. He was a very skilled cement finisher and was immensely proud of the work he created. In the warm months of summer, when he wasn’t working on a building project, or helping a family member with one, he could be found tending to the family’s extensive vegetable garden. A cold beer was never far away. Growing up in a large Italian family, three things were always present; good food, red wine and animated conversations. Get togethers with family and friends featured an abundance of each, and the lively debates about politics, life back home in Italy and other relevant topics of the day flowed freely (and loudly) into the late hours.
Giuseppe had an unparalleled work ethic and a seemingly limitless desire for work, but he also enjoyed the simple pleasures of life. He will be greatly missed by his family and many friends. Keep smiling, dad.
A Funeral Mass will be held at 11:00 am on Thursday, March 23, 2017 at Holy Rosary Parish Church, 510 River Avenue, with visitation 1 hour prior. Reception will follow at Thomson “In the Park” Funeral Home, 1291 McGillivray Boulevard.
The family would like to express a sincere thank you to the many volunteers, nurses and doctors who cared for Giuseppe during his illness.
