It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Jon Arthur Eastman on August 11, 2010.
Dad will be deeply missed by his loving wife, Alma, daughters Gail (David Garriock), Judy (David Smith) and son Gary (Joan Weitman). He is also survived by brothers Vincent (Ruth), Bernard (Linda) and numerous nieces and nephews, grandchildren Ryan (Erica) Garriock, Wade (Kristin) Garriock, Eryn (Randy) Reittinger, Jeff (Stephanie) Eastman, Andrew Eastman, Janna Eastman and Patrick Smith, great-grandchildren Kai, Elle and Cole. He is predeceased by parents Maria and Gunnsteinn, and brother Glen.
Dad was born near Riverton on August 5, 1925, where he spent his childhood on the family farm. At the age of 17, Dad joined #166 Squadron R.A.F. and served as the wireless operator on a Lancaster Bomber. Then, while serving in Squadron #153 on the night of February 3, 1945, he became a member of the Caterpillar Club when his plane was shot down over Holland. Dad and Mom married in 1950 and this September they would have celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary. He went on to work as a wholesale lumber agent followed by a career in real estate management. He founded Eastman Appraisal Services in 1982 and held an AACI designation with the Appraisal Institute of Canada. Dad is a past master of Capitol Lodge, past president of CAA Manitoba and past president of the Wartime Pilots and Observers Association.
Dad's love of nature and his garden were surpassed only by his love of family, which was paramount. Our world won't be the same without you. We love you.
God looked around His garden And found an empty space. He then looked upon the Earth And saw your tired face. He put His arms around you And lifted you to rest, God's garden must be beautiful For He only takes the best. He saw the road was getting rough And the hills were hard to climb So He closed your weary eyes And whispered, Peace be thine. It broke our hearts to lose you But you do not go alone For part of us went with you When Jesus called you home.
A memorial service will be held on Tuesday, August 17 at 2:00 p.m. at Thomson In the Park , 1291 McGillivary Blvd.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to CancerCare Manitoba.
