With broken hearts, we share the news of Julian’s passing on April 26, 2026 at the age of 53.
We find comfort in the belief that Julian has been reunited with his parents, Bob and Jackie Gates, his beloved grandma, Katherine Lutes, his aunt Janet, his uncle Ed, his father-in-law, Neill Koensgen, his mother-in-law, Gerri Rannie, and others who went before him.
Julian (aka “Jules” and “J”) grew up in Regina with his sisters, Kristine and Janna Gates, and his lifelong friends, Carl Kopeck and Gerry Pankratz. Julian had a happy childhood – one that was rich with love and laughter.
After graduating from O’Neill High School in 1990, Julian trained to become a flight service specialist, and later, an air traffic controller. He moved to Winnipeg in 1995 where he began what would become an impressive 31-year career with Nav Canada. Julian took immense pride in his work.
Julian met Roxanne Pare-Morin in 2006, and together they welcomed their son, Brayden, in June 2007. Julian loved being Brayden’s dad more than anything else in his life, and he was always a patient, gentle and loving papa.
Although Roxane and Julian did not remain a couple, they continued to maintain a close relationship grounded in friendship, mutual respect and a shared commitment to Brayden.
Julian lived many happy years in Winnipeg. He found true joy in fatherhood. He had friends who were like family. He enjoyed camping and boating at Falcon Lake, golfing, working out, traveling, and watching sports, stand-up comedy and SNL. He was passionate about cars and fascinated with quantum physics.
Julian and Brayden made many memorable trips back to Regina. These visits were highly anticipated by Julian’s nephews, Josh and Cole Silverson, who adored their uncle. Janna and Kristine also cherished every opportunity to spend time with their older brother.
In recent years, Julian found love with Jackie Carriere. They married in August 2025. Julian was excited to be a husband to Jackie and stepfather to her son, Bennett. He loved and cared for them deeply.
Julian was a beautiful person. He had a calming presence and a way of putting others at ease. He genuinely cared about people. He was kind to everyone. His laugh was contagious and unforgettable. Julian will be remembered with love and missed always.
A celebration of Julian’s life will be held at 2:30 on May 24, 2026 at the Caboto Centre, 1055 Wilkes Avenue in Winnipeg.
