She will be lovingly remembered by her children Bill, Diane (husband Glen Curtis), her grandchildren Adam and Amy (mother Kelly) and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her husband Ed, parents Ernie & Durrie Axcell, her sister Florence Grant and brother and sister-in-law Dyson and Joan Skelton.
Born in Winnipeg, Kay lived in the West End until the age of 8 when her parents had a home built in St. James. She attended Isaac Brock, Assiniboine and Linwood schools where she met her husband Ed whom she married in 1953. While going to school Kay worked part time at The Bay in the Tea Time Dainties. After graduation, she worked full time at the Grain Exchange until 1960 when she left to start a family.
Kay had a few favorite past times that she was dedicated to. For almost 40 years she was the lead pianist of the St. James Pop’s Orchestra (later known as the Winnipeg Pop’s Orchestra), she also played the piano for many years for the Smith Street Senior Choir. Kay was very involved with the St. James Horticultural Society - from having a plot at the community gardens to sitting on the board as Treasurer. Her dedication was recognized when she was given the honor of a Life Membership.
Kay was a devoted wife and mother and thoroughly enjoyed being with people. All her life she showed a genuine love and care for others and her gentle spirit was demonstrated to almost everyone she met.
A celebration of Kay’s life will be held on Saturday, March 17, 2018 at 11:00 a.m. at Church of the Rock, 1397 Buffalo Place.
The family would like to thank the home care staff from Comforts of Home Care. Kay loved all of you and the family is very grateful for your love, care and devotion to her over the past number of years. As well, thank you to the staff on 5N at Victoria Hospital for your care and compassion during the last weeks of Kay’s life.
