She was predeceased by her parents Dick and Grace Purdey and her in-laws Vic and Gwen Pinchin.
Pat was born and raised in Winnipeg, attended Vincent Massey Collegiate and graduated from the University of Manitoba Faculty of Home Economics.
She began her 15 year career with the Hudson’s Bay Company in 1968, finishing as a manager/buyer in cosmetics and fashion, during which she relished her buying trips to New York City, Montreal and Toronto. She left active employment to go on long-term disability in 1982.
Pat faced ankylosing spondylitis for 35 years and despite the severe physical challenges this presented, she was “Pollyanna” to everyone, always looking on the bright side of life and always claiming that someone else was worse off than her. It was the effects of this disease that damaged her lungs so much over the years and resulted in the respiratory failure after an attack of influenza and pneumonia that resulted in her passing.
In happier times, Pat enjoyed our travels to Hawaii and the West Indies. After Jeffery arrived, there were summer holidays at West Hawk and Brereton Lakes and winter getaways to Disney in California and Florida. She loved our many visits to Orange Lake Country Club in Orlando.
She was a devoted and loving caregiver to her parents and her in-laws, as all four declined and passed within a 5 year period from 2010 to 2015. During the five years her Dad was in Deer Lodge PCC, she drove across town to visit him at least every other day.
This Christmas was her happiest in many years, as our home was filled with the joy and laughter of children. She was so proud that Jeffrey has grown into such a fine, successful young man and she can be at peace with how much her loving and encouraging influence had on his development.
There will be a celebration of Pat’s life at a later date. A further announcement will follow.
Many thanks to Drs. Wm. Schifke (GP), Paul Kerr (ENT) and Margaret England (END) who helped her so much over the last number of years, and to the ICU doctors, nurses and staff at the Victoria General who provided such outstanding care for her over her last four weeks. Many dear, long time friends visited her in the ICU and she cherished your love.
Above all, Pat was the most amazing, loving wife to Rick and devoted, caring mother to Jeffrey. My darling, you will always be in our hearts and memories and we will love you forever.
