Randolph Moinina Gorvie passed away on February 2, 2026, with his family by his side. He died at 82 years old after a long struggle with Parkinson’s disease.
Born in Pujehun, Sierra Leone in 1943, Randolph's journey took him across continents in pursuit of education and opportunity. In the mid-1960s, he was awarded a scholarship to study economics in the former Czechoslovakia, in a cohort of students from across Africa, Asia, and Latin America. He immigrated to Canada to pursue a Master of Arts in Economics from the University of Manitoba in 1972 and Winnipeg has been his home ever since.
Randolph enjoyed a career as an economist in the provincial public service, but his true calling was as a community builder and organizer. He was a fixture of the early Afro-Caribbean political scene in the 1980s and 90s. Most notably, he was a founding member of the African Association of Manitoba and the inaugural board president of the Harambee Housing Co-op in south Winnipeg. A card-carrying member of the NDP, he had the pleasure of serving as a member of the first Manitoba Ethnocultural Advisory and Advocacy Council in the legislature in the early 2000s.
Randolph also maintained deep ties to his Sierra Leonean roots, as one of the original members of the Sierra Leone Nationals Association of Manitoba and his tenure as a regional chief of the Tegloma Federation. In response to the devastating civil war in the country (1991-2001), he worked tirelessly to help settle, integrate, and unite his displaced countrymen and women in Winnipeg.
Randolph will be remembered for his smile, his love of politics and associational life, his wisdom and broad perspective, and his generosity of spirit, time, and resources.
Randolph is predeceased by his mother Miatta, father James, and sisters Rebecca and Katumu. He is survived by his beloved wife and friend Emma, his daughters Telisha (husband Greg), Miatta, and Jenny, and his niece Gladys, who will forever cherish his memory and carry forward his legacy of public service and compassion for all.
The family would like to thank the staff from Unit 2 at Tuxedo Villa for his compassionate care at the end of his life.
A Celebration of Life will be held at Thomson “In the Park” Funeral Home on Monday, February 23, 2026 at 10:00 AM. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to U-Turn Parkinson’s (uturnparkinsons.org).
