It is with great sadness that we announce the sudden passing of Stanley Edward Schick on Wednesday, July 5th, 2023.
He is survived by his four daughters: Karen Sparrow (Jeff), Lynda Raghunanan (Ronald), Kate Hodgins (Craig), and Lori Anderson (Scott), 10 grandchildren: Brittany Gietz (Tim), Scott Sparrow (Alora Mastrolonardo), Ariana & Kayleigh Raghunanan, Rayanna, Ashton, McKinley & Lochlin Hodgins, and Coralie & Lincoln Anderson, 3 great grandchildren: Georgia, Sadie, and Hazel Gietz.
He was pre-deceased by his loving wife Joyce, mother Mary Schick, father Michael Schick, and sister Jessie Tomiuk.
Stan was born on an acreage in rural Manitoba and then grew up in Winnipeg’s North End. He often shared stories of his childhood recounting very specific details of where people lived and what became of many of his friends later on in life.
Stan was very involved in athletics in high school, especially basketball. After high school, he traveled to the US to pursue Athletics, however, soon thereafter he found that this wasn’t the career path for him and returned to Winnipeg. He first started working as an Administrator with the municipality of Brooklands. In 1966, he then became an Administrator with the Federal Government when he joined the Department of Fisheries & Oceans. He held several administrative positions and retired from the role of Director of Inspection in 1996 after 30 years of service.
Stan should have been an architect. He designed and built many things such as a cottage, home, rec-room and several backyard decks. He was always ready to offer his input and opinions for other family members’ building projects as well. He enjoyed woodworking and after his retirement him and Joyce started designing and building home décor pieces for family and friends. They sold many of their pieces at local craft sales.
Stan was always there to chauffeur his daughters around to various extra-curricular activities and sports while they were growing up. He was happy to take on the role of number one fan and also volunteered his time to help out. Later he enjoyed watching his grandkids participate in various activities and was always very proud of their accomplishments.
Stan enjoyed playing golf and spent many years marshalling at Kingswood Golf Club and Pinawa Golf Club. When he and Joyce moved to Pinawa he also volunteered his time on the Pinawa Golf Course Board of Directors and the Pinawa Arts Council Board of Directors.
After Joyce’s passing, Stan enjoyed his weekly lunches with his long-time friend Roy Spivak. He also enjoyed getting together with his nephew Ernie and cousins to learn more about his family history.
Stan had many health challenges over the years, but seemed to overcome them.
Stan loved to travel with Joyce and his family. Some of his favorite places were Las Vegas, Hawaii, Niagara Falls, Florida, South Dakota, Atlantic City, and camping at Falcon Lake. He also really enjoyed work trips to El Salvador and northern Manitoba, later sharing stories from these trips. His love of Indigenous art was sparked by his interactions with the local people on his travels up north. He and Joyce spent many of their early retirement years as snowbirds in Texas and California.
Stan will be remembered as a loving husband, father, and Papa.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Stan’s name to the Cancer Research Society (www.societederecherchesurlecancer.ca).
A Celebration of Stan’s life will take place on Sunday, September 10th, 2023 at 2:00 p.m. at Thompson “In the Park” Funeral home, 1291 McGillivray Blvd.
Fond memories and expressions of sympathy may be shared at www.thomsoninthepark.com for the Schick family.
