We inform with heavy hearts the passing of a remarkable man—Sukhpal Singh Saggi, lovingly known as Master Ji. He was a man of wisdom, strength, and an unshakable spirit, who touched so many lives with his kindness, guidance, and unwavering dedication to his family and community. We all loved him so much, and he will be deeply missed—his laughter, his jokes, his stories of times past, and above all, his special tradition of measuring the height and weight of all his grandchildren after every trip back from India.
Born on June 20, 1941, in Sattiana, District Hoshiarpur, Dad entered the world carrying the legacy of resilience. His father, Kartar Singh Saggi, passed away when he was only three months old, leaving him in the care of his beloved mother, Shanker Kaur Saggi, and his grandfather, Sardar Gurbaksh Singh. It was his dada ji who shaped his life, instilling in him values of hard work, honesty, and perseverance—lessons he carried with him every day. So deep was his gratitude for his grandfather that he spoke about him in almost every conversation, a true testament to the love and respect he held for the man who raised him.
Though his journey was filled with struggles, Dad never let adversity define him. Instead, he rose above challenges, building a life and a legacy that will live on for generations. His biggest pillar of strength was his loving wife, Bakhsish Kaur Saggi, with whom he shared 58 beautiful years of marriage. Together, they built a home filled with love, laughter, and strong values.
By profession, Dad was a teacher, but at heart, he was also a true sportsman. He was passionate about coaching soccer, and his love for the game extended beyond the classroom and into the community, including right here in Winnipeg. He was deeply respected and admired, not only for his teaching but for the way he mentored and uplifted those around him.
Dad’s greatest pride was his family. He was a devoted father to his two sons, Harkamal Saggi and Mandeep Saggi, both of whom followed a path of success, becoming engineers. He warmly welcomed his daughters-in-law, Lovely Saggi and Kamal Saggi, into his family, cherishing Kamal’s shared love for teaching. This passion for education runs deep in our family, now carried forward by his granddaughter, Sanveer Saggi.
He was blessed with five wonderful grandchildren—Manveer, who is pursuing nursing; Sanveer, who is studying to be a teacher; Simran, who is studying medicine; Sukhman, who is becoming a civil engineer; and Parkirat, who is undergoing graduation. Each of them carries a piece of their beloved grandfather’s spirit, and through them, his legacy will continue to shine.
Though he did not have siblings of his own, Dad shared an unbreakable bond with his cousin sister, Gurdev Kaur, whom he loved as his own. Family was everything to him, and he lived by the values of love, loyalty, and selflessness.
After a full and meaningful life, Dad took his final breath on Sunday, February 16, in the loving presence of his younger son, Mandeep. Though he is no longer with us physically, his presence, wisdom, and the love he shared will forever be etched in our hearts.
Dad was a pillar of strength, a guiding light, and a man who truly made a difference in the world around him. As we say our goodbyes today, let us remember him not with sadness, but with gratitude—for the love he gave, the lessons he taught, and the beautiful memories he leaves behind.
May his soul rest in eternal peace.
Waheguru Ji Ka Khalsa, Waheguru Ji Ki Fateh.
A funeral service for Sukhpal will be held Friday, February 21, 2025 from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM at Thomson "In the Park" Funeral Home and Cemetery, 1291 McGillivray Blvd, Winnipeg, MB.
