Tom was born in Rivers, Manitoba on April 22, 1928. The family settled in MacGregor, MB in 1938. Tom finished high school in MacGregor and over the years enjoyed taking his young family there to visit and reminisce about the “old days” he spent running movies through the old projector at the local theatre as a teen-ager, visiting Roy’s Royal Café and petting Roy's dog Joe, meeting old friends on the street, and visiting with Auntie Ruth at the post office.
Dad worked in radio broadcasting for over 44 years. He began his career in 1945 at a radio station in Fort Frances, Ontario, followed by ten years as a radio announcer in Prince Albert, Regina and Brandon. In 1955 he joined the CBC and in 1958 moved with Lorraine to Calgary where he helped launch television station CBRT. In 1962 Tom accepted a transfer to work as a radio technician with CBC and he and Lorraine moved back to Winnipeg to raise their family. He retired from CBC in 1989.
Dad and Mom had the opportunity to travel after they retired. Dad was always intrigued by Egypt, and was finally able to fulfill his dream of visiting the tombs there, tour Europe including England to connect with cousins, embarked with Mom on numerous cruises, and enjoyed providing the music on short gambling bus trips with their senior friends.
He was a member of St. Johns Masonic Lodge 4 and also the Over 55 and Retired of 283 ANAVETS.
Above all, family was foremost to him, and his ultimate treasure was his “Sweet Lorraine.”
Cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be held at Crestview United Church, 316 Hamilton Avenue on June 9th at 11:00 a.m., with Rev. Beth Rutherford officiating.
The Family would like to thank the Staff of 2nd Floor East, Oakview Personal Care, for the care given to Dad during his stay over the last two years. The family thanks the Staff at Grace Hospital Emergency Dept. for their care and compassion, this past week.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Tom’s name could be made to the Parkinson’s Society, or to a charity of one’s choice.
“All the best Dad! Love you Forever!”
