Ginny passed peacefully on May 24th at Beacon Hill Lodge.
Ginny was predeceased in 1992 by her devoted husband, Les.
Mom is survived by her daughter, Deborah Johnson, and her son, Donald Lindberg (Lynn), grandchildren, Corinne Johnson (Kurtis), Jeffrey Johnson (Laura), Colleen Lindberg and Michael Lindberg (Nicole), great-grandchildren, Cole, Conner and Mason, and step-great-grandchildren, Brandon and Miles, nephew, John Soika (Sandy), and nieces, Cheryl Clements (Carson) and Cathy Clements (Brian).
Mom’s family was her pride and joy and she thoroughly enjoyed all family get-togethers. Everyone loved walking into her home for holiday meals as the aromas of her cooking filled the air. She was an awesome cook and she absolutely loved preparing meals for others. Even if the celebrations were not being held at her home, Mom would always show up with a dish or two.
Mom grew up in Rainy River, Ontario, where she met her husband, Les. They began their life and family together there until moving to Winnipeg in the mid 1950’s. They made their home in Fort Garry where she was a stay-at-home mom until her children started school. At that time, Mom took an evening typing class and with that, she was able to get a job at Powell Equipment where she worked until the family moved to Edmonton in 1966. When the family was settled in their new home, Mom “hit the pavement” to get a job and was offered one at a downtown CA firm. There she worked until Dad was transferred back to Winnipeg in 1968. Again, Mom found herself looking to find work and was hired by Price Waterhouse. She quickly worked her way up to become the head of the Steno Pool. With technology advancements, Price Waterhouse converted to computers and Mom was selected to go to Toronto for the training in order to teach her staff in Winnipeg. She remained a highly respected and dedicated employee at Price Waterhouse until her retirement in May of 1991.
Being from a small town, Mom and Dad decided that they would like to have a cottage by a lake. Their friends, Stella and Glen, had a cottage at Beaver Creek. They were invited out there on numerous occasions and loved the location. When a lakefront cottage became available, they jumped at the opportunity to put in an offer which was accepted. As time passed, Mom and Dad built an addition in order that everyone had their own space. Cherished memories were quickly made with the entire family…fishing, swimming, card games, horseshoes, long walks, watching the squirrels hide peanuts and trying to steal the birdseed from the bird feeders, watching the humming birds, reading, and of course – thoughtfully planned meals.
Mom took pride in her gardens. She had a green thumb when it came to her outdoor flowers and vegetables. However, she couldn’t keep a house plant alive, but she carefully nurtured her vegetables from seed to plant outside.
When Mom was still working, she would play in company golf tournaments where she developed an enjoyment for the game. Dad bought her a set of clubs and she joined St. Boniface Golf Club. There she quickly became a loving member of the golf community and joined the Wednesday Ladies League. She built many lifelong friendships. Everyone loved Mom. She also played in the annual 18 hole Two Balls at St. Boniface with Jeff and later with Don. She loved playing in those tournaments.
Mom loved watching all sports –curling, golf, football, hockey, tennis, and baseball. She and Dad had season’s tickets to the Winnipeg Blue Bombers. She would go to watch the St. Boniface Saints Junior hockey team play at the Maginot Arena. She also enjoyed going to watch her son play baseball and hockey and her grandchildren and great-grandchildren play softball, baseball and hockey.
Mom loved to drive and she taught her children, her grandchildren, and a few friends how to drive. She had patience. She encouraged her friends who did not have their licences, to get them later in life. Independence was very important to her. She would take her friends to their appointments, shopping and out for lunch. She enjoyed these outings.
Being part of a church community has always been an important part of Mom’s life. Her faith gave her strength throughout. The church was there for her and she was there for the church devoting her time. She volunteered for Administrative Support, Worship, Membership and Pastoral Care Councils. She phoned and welcomed newcomers to the church, prepared and delivered dinners to grieving families, drove people to church, visited the sick in hospital and home. She was also a helper at Moms and Tots. Her passion though, was singing in the church choir. Every time she sang, you could see the joy and happiness in her eyes. Mom had the most beautiful voice. She met Helen in the choir and they became best of friends. Mom passed on the love of music to her family.
Mom had a heart of gold and gave the very best advice. She never judged, she listened. We all will miss you, Mom.
A very special thanks to all staff at Beacon Hill Lodge especially the 4th floor where she lived. You cared for her like she was a part of your family during a very difficult time. I would also like to personally thank Minister Patrick Woodbeck for the advice he has given to me.
