We are deeply saddened to announce the passing of Wayne Allan Ireland on July 12, 2024, after a brief battle with cancer. Wayne will be lovingly remembered by his sons, Garrett Ireland (Emma) and Cody Ireland (Alyssa), and his grandchildren, Eloise, Harrison, Miles, and Vienna. He is also survived by his sister, Debbie Zapotochny (Tony), and many other relatives and friends. He also leaves behind his two beloved animal companions, Cinnamon and Dumpy.
Wayne was predeceased by his sister Lori D’ottavio, his brother David Ireland, and his parents, Allan (Butch) and Elsie Ireland.
Wayne was born in Middleton, Nova Scotia, but spent much of his life in Gimli, where his heart always resided. Despite living away from Gimli on several occasions, he consistently returned to the community he loved. Wayne enjoyed being in the company of his family and friends, always welcoming them with an open door and a cold beer.
Wayne’s professional life was as diverse as it was distinguished. He was an entrepreneur, painter, carpenter, water park builder, construction worker, and provincial park worker, among other roles. His dedication and commitment to his work were evident in his meticulous craftsmanship and tireless effort.
In the summer, Wayne embraced the outdoors. He enjoyed spending his time kayaking, having bonfires, playing yard games like horseshoes and washer toss, and grilling the perfect steaks. In winter, he could be found in his usual spot at the dining room table watching hockey, particularly the Winnipeg Jets. You knew Wayne was thinking of you when you received a “Go Jets Go” text from him. His passion and knowledge for hockey was great and he could recall details about most NHL teams and players. He also played on several recreational teams as a young adult. He had a true love for the game.
Equally passionate about music, Wayne could spend hours listening to all genres and was always discovering artists and songs to show off in a playlist. Wayne’s home often became the setting for impromptu jam sessions and lively kitchen dance parties. He even performed and sang in his own band during high school. Music was a big part of Wayne’s life and a source of happiness.
Wayne’s greatest pride and joy though were his sons and grandchildren. He was Garrett’s biggest supporter during his hockey years, never missing a game, and he would often spend time listening to music and watching live concerts with Cody. Wayne appreciated hearing stories and receiving pictures of his grandkids, and he always looked forward to spending time with them. He celebrated every milestone and achievement of his family with unwavering support and love.
Wayne’s strength, enthusiasm, and boundless love for his family will be profoundly missed. His legacy will live on in the hearts of all who knew him.
A celebration of Wayne’s life will be announced at a future date.
