Helen Ruth Chapple Matthews

Helen Ruth Chapple Matthews (94) of Winston-Salem passed away peacefully Thursday, April 6 2023. She was born March 21,1929 in Forsyth County to Garfield Allen and Ellen Rose Lentz Chapple. She grew up in the Ardmore neighborhood.

She was preceded in death by her husband Jack; 6 brothers and 5 sisters. The Chapple dozen are now all together once again. Surviving are her daughters Jan Clayton (Mark) and Pam Phipps (Mike) of Winston-Salem; loving granddaughters Lindsay and Morgan of Raleigh NC, a “sister” in heart Louise Chapple, 2 sons in heart, Frankie Clayton and Hal Chapple, a special niece Ellen Hayes and many wonderful nieces and nephews.

Her granddaughters were the love of her life. She considered them her biggest blessing and each of them believed they were her “favorite”.

Helen had charisma and was gifted at making others laugh. She was the life of any party, enjoyed yardwork, her flowers and birds, watching all kinds of sports, especially ACC basketball and was a big Carolina Tarheels fan. Helen had a wonderful childhood filled with many memories of her siblings. Her daughters and granddaughters enjoyed hearing the many stories of their escapades. Growing up she sang in the choir at Augsburg, played basketball and softball. She worked at Westinghouse as a bookkeeper, then became a stay at home Mom and returned to work after her husband retired because she kept tripping over him as he followed her around the house.

She was a strong women and was the first person called by her daughters on any kind of news – she was quick to celebrate their success and provided an extraordinary shoulder for their struggles. She was always there.

Visitation will be held Tuesday April 11 from 6pm to 8pm at Vogler Funeral Home of Forsyth at 3815 Yadkinville Rd, Winston-Salem. A Funeral Service will be held at 2:00pm April 12, 2023 at Forsyth Memorial Park Mausoleum Chapel.
