

Mrs. Shirley Bailey Smith, 76, passed away on September 27, 2011 in Charlotte surrounded by her family. She was born July 23, 1935 in Troy, NC to the late Ulas Paul Bailey and the late Mary Bailey Cole. She attended Duke University for X-ray technology, and she spent the majority of her career as an X-ray Technician at the Breast Clinic in Winston-Salem. In her earlier retirement she spent much of her time as a volunteer at Old Town Elementary School where she helped students with reading difficulties improve their reading skills and started gardens to teach the students about plants and gardening. She won a Jefferson award in 1997, among other awards, for her exemplary volunteer work. Her interests included reading, gardening, walking, cooking and crafts. She was a devoted daughter, mother, and grandmother. Her caring and devotion to those around her was truly inspiring. Shirley is preceded in death by her husband Edward Smith. She is survived by her younger brother, “Sonny” Bailey, her sister Mary Ellen Gooch, her children Susan Peck, Chris Smith, Laura Meteney, and Michael Smith, her grandchildren Madelon Peck, Bailey Peck and Ella Meteney, her sons-in-law Dustin Peck and David Meteney, and her daughter-in-law Sarah Stienessen. A visitation will be held at 11:00am Saturday, October 1, 2011 at Vogler and Sons Funeral Home in Winston-Salem, followed by a graveside service at Forsyth Memorial Park at 12:30pm. The family will receive guests at Shirley’s home in Winston-Salem after the service. The family would like to extend a special thanks to all of her caregivers at Clarebridge Memory Care facility at Brookdale Nursing home in Charlotte. Also, a special thanks to Charlotte Hospice Care for making her passing peaceful.
