Walter was born to German immigrant parents, Frank and Amelia Reck, in Queens, NY on August 15, 1928 during the Great Depression. He graduated from Jamaica High School where he was the co-captain of the varsity swimming team. He was particularly proud that his team won the state championship. Walter proudly served his country in the United States Army. He was stationed in Germany, affording him a chance to meet his German relatives when on leave.
His father was an engineer with Bell Laboratories, and Walter learned drafting and fabrication in his father’s home shop. Upon his return from serving in the Army, he went to work for AT&T. Walter earned his bachelor’s degree in business from Hofstra University at night, in just three years. He then attended the Pratt Institute. He spent the remainder of his career as a Manufacturing Engineer.
His love of swimming continued past high school. Walter swam in the Senior Olympics and won a gold medal. One could often find him at the Salemtowne pool. He loved being in all types of water – lakes, rivers, the ocean, and being outdoors in general. Walter adored sailing, kayaking, hiking, and birdwatching. He devoted plenty of time to gardening, especially at Salemtowne. Walter’s green thumb would impress anyone.
Walter was always happy and seemed to make friends wherever he went. His friendly charm will be missed by all who knew him. Walter leaves behind his daughters, Vicky (Ken) Cook and Ann (Joe Raymond) Roberts, Matt Cook, Aaron Roberts, and Rachel Roberts; nephews, Steve Reck, Robert Reck, and Gary Reck; and numerous friends he met throughout his life.
A celebration of Walter’s life will be held at Salemtowne on May 18th at 2:00 in the Smith Saal.
Memorial contributions can be made in Walter’s honor to Trellis Supportive Care or to Salemtowne’s Resident Care Fund.
