She was born on October 1, 1934 in Surry County and raised by the late Coley and Vergie Melton. Wanda graduated early from Mountain Park High School with Honors. At the age of 16, she married the love of her life, for 73 years, Ralph Frank Hanes who preceded her in death 4 months and 2 days earlier on August 4, 2024.
Left to cherish her memory are children, Michael “Mickey” Frank Hanes (Tamera) and daughter, Donna Jean Hanes; grandchildren, Richelle “Ricki” Renee Hanes Smedley (Josh) and Matthew Frank Hanes; and many other loved ones.
She was a member of Old Town Baptist Church for 62 years where she belonged and taught for many years, the Faithful Followers Sunday School Class. She retired from Western Electric/AT&T as a Data Systems Supervisor. Wanda enjoyed teaching Sunday School, writing, cooking/baking, cleaning, and traveling with her husband. However, her greatest joy was being a devoted wife, doting mother and adoring grandmother.
A Tribute Service with prayers with be held Thursday, January 16th at 2pm at Vogler Funeral and Cremations with a Celebration of Life Reception to immediately follow at 3815 Yadkinville Road, Winston-Salem, NC. Entombment will be in Forsyth Memorial Park.
