James (Jim) Farmer Mathews of Orlando entered the Kingdom of Heaven August 4, 2012, he was 74. James was born on November 14, 1937 in Shelbyville, KY. Jim was attending the University of Kentucky where he was to play basketball for Adolph Rupp when he chose to serve in the US Navy where he did so from 1955 to 1978. In his service he saw action in The Bay of Pigs as well as Vietnam. It was there where he was awarded the Bronze Star for heroism. He was also nominated for the Purple Heart, but respectfully declined to accept it. Within his 23 years of service, Jim was recognized numerous times for meritorious service to this country. During his enlistment he achieved the rank of E-9 Master Chief. He worked another 20 years for Presentation South in Orlando. During his life he served as a coach, teacher, and mentor too many young men throughout his life and career. He was a loving and devoted husband, father, and son. Jim was also a deacon at Powers Drive Baptist Church, where he acted as a humble servant of God. His career took him all around the world, but he lived in Orlando since 1978. He was a humble man who had several passions in his life: his family, church, collectables, and the University of Kentucky Wildcats.
He was predeceased by his brother John Murray Mathews. He is survived by his wife of 50 years Mildred S. Mathews, 4 children – Sharon Tinaya, James Mathews, Richard, Mathews, and William Mathews, 8 grandchildren- Mariko Tinaya, Nathanael Tinaya, Brittany Mathews McAlpin, Christine Mathews, Devin Mathews, Shelby Mathews, James Mathews, and Brandon Mathews as well as 2 great grandchildren – Kimberly Rios and Trystan McAlpin.
Viewing services will be from 6pm to 8pm at Collison Carey Hand Funeral Home on 1148 East Plant Street, Winter Garden. Funeral Services will be at Powers Drive Baptist Church on 3311 Powers Drive, Orlando starting at 2pm.
