Steven Allen Behrens passed away this Monday, April 11th, 2022 surrounded by loving family at his home in Winter Garden, FL. Steve was born in Elizabeth, New Jersey to Susan Wright Behrens (late) and Eugene Behrens (late) on April the 4th, 1946. He is survived by his wife, Sandra Behrens; his children, Scott and Anne Behrens; his brother, Roger Behrens; and his grandchildren, Sam Behrens, Brandon O’Connor and Joshua O’Connor.
Throughout his life, Steve was a constant source of light to those around him, teaching others by example how to live life to the fullest.
As a child in New Jersey, Steve started practicing the business skills that he would study and hone later in life by selling his grandmother’s homemade shortbread in his neighborhood. In high school, Steve served as Class President to 1200 students and became Captain of the football and track teams. He attended Brown University and Wharton, where he earned his MBA. While working in Philadelphia after graduating Wharton, Steve met his life-long best friend and wife Sandy, to whom he would remain married for the rest of his life.
After Philadelphia, Steve moved to Massachusetts and spent time working at Polaroid Corporation and Digital Equipment Corporation; while he and Sandy raised a family of two children, vacationing frequently in New Hampshire. While working at Digital Equipment, Steve also moved to Germany for two years before returning to the United States and moving to Florida, where he stayed until the end of his life.
Steve loved life and tried every day to live it to the fullest. He had a love of travel and discovery, voyaging all over the globe to see new places and people and learn about the world and the cultures that surrounded him. His travels took him to six of the seven continents, visiting such exotic locales as Mt. Kilimanjaro, Nepal, Alaska, and Chile.
Steve loved to eat and was a ‘foodie’ at heart. On his travels he would love to eat the local cuisine and would remember the places he had visited by the restaurants at which he had eaten. Steve was never afraid to try eating or cooking a new dish and became known for his willingness to sample foods that many others would not.
Steve loved sports and the sense of competition that surrounded them. He was an active athlete throughout his life and enjoyed sitting down with family and friends to watch sporting events on the television. Throughout his life he played football, rugby, ran track, and raced in boat races, bicycle races and triathlons, the latter of which he would continue to do into his 70s.
Steve placed huge importance on learning and education and never stopped learning about new things. He remained an avid reader his entire life and loved reading everything from current events to histories to pulp fiction. He referred to himself as “an omnivore” when it came to reading.
The family will not be holding a formal memorial service but plans to hold small memorial gatherings with friends and family as they visit. Steven will be cremated, and his ashes spread at Holt’s Ledge in New Hampshire at his request. It is a location at which he said he had many good memories. In lieu of flowers, the family invites you to please consider making a donation to Habitat for Humanity in Steve’s name. Condolences may be offered here in the online guest book.
