WINTER HAVEN - Evelyn Louise Hughes, a lifetime resident of Winter Haven, Florida, went peacefully home to the arms of her Lord and Savior from the arms of her devoted cousin, Sarah Daniel and her caregiver Lesley Peck. She was the daughter of Clinton H. and Estelle Douglas, and the granddaughter of one of the pioneer Winter Haven families John A. Bennett.
Evelyn was a lifetime member of Inwood Baptist Church now The Way. She attended school at Winter Haven High School and graduated in 1949. She received her BS Degree at Florida Southern College and Master's Degree at the University of Florida. She also received an Educational Specialist Degree from Rollins College. Evelyn was a biology teacher at Winter Haven High School for 11 years, and a science supervisor K-12 for the Polk County Schools for 20 years.
She was a member of the National Association of Science Teachers and American Biology Teachers Association. She was a member of the Florida Association of Supervisors and Administrators, past president of the Winter Haven Branch of American Association of University Women, and Business and Professional Women's Club where she served on the State Board of Directors. She was past chairman of the Polk County Unit of the American Cancer Society and a member of the board of directors of the American Red Cross.
Survivors include cousins, Sarah Daniel, Winter Haven, Leon Touchton, Jacksonville, Betty Seiler, Pembrook Pines, Ivan Eugene Prescott, Deltona, as well as many other relatives and friends.
Visitation will be from 10-11 a.m. with services at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Ott-Laughlin Funeral Home, Winter Haven.
