LAKE ALFRED - Foy B. Smith of Lake Alfred passed away on March 31, 2011 of natural causes. She went peacefully with her caregiver, Kathy Durrance and helpers at her side.
She was born in Mars Hill, NC on October 24, 1910. She received her bachelor degree in NC and taught school for 6 years before moving to Lake Alfred in 1948 with her husband and daughter.
Upon arriving, they joined the First Baptist Church of Lake Alfred where she became pianist, organist and held many other positions in the church. She taught 2nd and 3rd grades in Lake Alfred until she retired in 1969.
Foy Smith's 100th birthday was celebrated during the month of October 2010. She was recognized by the City of Lake Alfred Commissioners, Bartow County Commissioners, Lake Alfred Baptist Church, all living Presidents of the USA, Governor Crist and her friends and family.
She was preceded in death by her husband Conoley in 1996 and daughter Margaret; two sisters, Nona B Campbell of Travelers Rest, SC and Nell B Willson of Weaverville, NC, and two brothers, Carmel Briggs of Mars Hill, NC and Henry Briggs of Indiana.
Survivors include her nephews & nieces, Roy B Campbell of St. Marys, GA, James W Campbell of Catonsville, MD, Edward Briggs of Murrells Inlet, SC, Sarah C Glass of Travelers Rest, SC, Melba B Etchison of Converse, IN, Rebecca B Warren of Wabash, IN, and Virginia B Chandler of Sparta, TN. Also surviving are many great nephews and nieces, and many great great nephews and nieces.
Visitation will be Friday, April 8th from 5-7pm at Ott-Laughlin in Winter Haven. A "Celebration of her Life' will be Saturday, April 9th at 1 pm at the First Baptist Church of Lake Alfred.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Good Shepherd Hospice or Lake Alfred First Baptist Church.
