

John proudly served in the US Navy for four years and served in Vietnam, where he earned a bronze star for his service. After his military career, he worked as a journeyman electrician and later pursued his passion as a master gardener.
He was married to the love of his life, Gail, for 47 years, sharing a life filled with love and companionship. John's personal interests included woodworking, pottery, painting, reading, nature, and animals, which brought him great joy.
John enjoyed his volunteer work at the First Presbyterian Soup Kitchen, where he made a significant impact through his dedication and kindness.
John is survived by his loving wife, Gail Van Allen, daughters Jennifer Van Allen (Mike Allison) and Heidi Munoz (Eynar Munoz), as well as her grandchildren, Jacob Munoz and Anna Munoz; sister Katherine Noll, beloved dog Cookie, and several other extended family members and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents David Van Allen and Christine Smedema, as well as his mother-in-law Anne Burch, and father-in-law Harley Burch.
A memorial service will be held at the First Presbyterian Church of Winter Haven, located at 637 6th St NW, Winter Haven, Florida, 33881, on December 23, 2025, at 1:00 pm.
