

HIGGINS, A. STANLEY Family and friends will celebrate Stan’s life on March 7, 2013 at 3:00 pm at the Episcopal Church of the Good Shepherd in Maitland. He was called to his heavenly rest on March 3, 2013.
His life began in 1922. After growing up in Chattanooga, he received a B.S. in electrical engineering at Tennessee Tech in 1948. He worked in Oak Ridge, Tenn., for the McGraw-Hill Book Co., then in Cincinnati for General Electric, and finally in Pittsburgh for 27 years with Westinghouse. There he was manager of communications for the R&D Center, retiring in 1987.
During his technical writing career, Stan was active in the Society for Technical Communication and was a charter member when it was founded in 1953. In 1975 he was elected a Fellow of the international group, which today has 20,000 members. For 15 years he was editor of its quarterly magazine, and in 1979-80 was its president.
Stan was an active Episcopalian all his life. He served on the Vestry (governing body) for 6 years at St. Martin’s in Pittsburgh and for 6 years at Good Shepherd in Maitland. At both churches he contributed to the publication processing, most recently as editor of Good Shepherd’s newsletter, the Good News.
For many years Stan was active at the Chambrel retirement community in Longwood. He served two terms as President of the Residents’ Association, in several offices on the Residents’ Council, and was editor of the Chambrelian, monthly newsletter, for two years. He was also facilitator of the Chambrel Chorus and the Bridge Club.
Stan and his first wife Jean came to Orlando in 1987. In 1992 they celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary; later that year she died. He was blessed with another wife, Arleen, in 1993. Her untimely death came in 1997. In 1998 he was again blessed, this time with LaVina, who died in 2005.
Survivors are Jean LeMieux-Warthen, Lake Mary; David, State College, Pa.; and Ann Higgins Blind, Atlanta; four grandchildren: Danielle Bourgeois, Houston; Nicole Suggs, Orlando; Alex and Peter Blind, Atlanta; and five great-grandchildren: Jennifer and Gavin Bateman, Houston; Katie Suggs, Winter Haven; Nicholas Suggs, Orlando; Michael Morris, State College, Pa.; sister, Mrs. Phyllis Lundien, Chattanooga, Tn.
