He was born on July 19, 1931, in Jamestown, New York, the third of four children, to Arthur and Anna Bergstrom. Upon graduating from high school, during the Korean War, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy. He served as a radar operator on the Destroyer U.S.S. Hank. In 1955, after his military service, he entered Bradley University. In this same year he met Ethna Joyce Sulmonetti who would become his wife of over 60 years. They were married in 1957 and moved to Boston, where they both graduated from Boston University. Upon Duane’s completion of law school the Bergstroms moved to Orlando where Duane began practicing law. Soon he joined the firm Rush, Reed, and Marshall which eventually became Rush, Marshall, and Bergstrom. He continued to practice law into his 80’s at Attorney’s Title Insurance Company. A member of the Florida Bar Association, he retired after half a century as a real property attorney in central Florida. A founding member of the Nu Class, he belonged to First United Methodist Church of Orlando. Duane was an avid outdoorsman, and enjoyed spending time with his family at their vacation home in the mountains of North Carolina.
He is survived by his wife Ethna, their three children, Timothy Bergstrom, Kimberly Harcrow and Shannon Bergstrom, and their spouses Emily Bergstrom, Rick Harcrow, and Andres Pelaez, and four grandchildren: Madeline and Fletcher Harcrow, and Anna and Katie Bergstrom. Deeply loved by his family, we are blessed by the gift of his life.
A Memorial Service will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, July 7th, at First United Methodist Church of Orlando.
In lieu of flowers, donation may be made to the First United Methodist Church of Orlando Bergstrom Memorial fund in memory of A. Duane Bergstrom.
