November 11, 1929 - May 2, 2025
Helen was born November 11, 1929 in Ellwood City, Pennsylvania to Mathias and Sara Kast. The youngest of three siblings whom were each a mere year apart. She, along with her sister Sara and brother John would bask in childhood until the untimely death of their father, when Helen was the tender age of 8. Her widowed mother then raised the three siblings during the time of the great Depression.
Helen was a gregarious and motivated young lady, graduating as an Honor student from Lincoln High School in 1947. Helen’s career path included bookkeeper in Banking, stenographer for the Railroad, Court Clerk of Daytona Police Department, and secretary/bookkeeper for Ossinsky & George Attorneys at Law from which she retired.
The love of her life, George Berendt, and she were married on June 25, 1955. They welcomed their firstborn, a son, Michael, followed by a son, Mark before leaving Pennsylvania to settle in Holly Hill, Florida in 1958. George and Helen became owners/operators of the Greenland Motel and welcomed daughter, Marcy, to the family.
The 12 unit Greenland Motel provided an unique life experience of meeting people from all corners of the globe. Both challenging and rewarding in nature, the motel became a gathering place for entertaining family and friends while raising their three children.
After retiring, Helen and George enjoyed many years together until George went to be with the Lord in February 2008. Helen then moved to the Lutheran Haven community in Oviedo where she volunteered in many capacities, and took pleasure in the social activities of the community, living both independently and in later years, assisted.
Helen’s strength and resilience was found in her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ and she served faithfully on committees, boards and guilds within the Lutheran Church and in the community. She took particular joy in her three children, six grandchildren and nine great grandchildren always remembering birthdays and anniversaries.
Her outgoing personality, beautiful smile and kind heart will be dearly missed.
