JACQUELINE DENISE CHASTANG SMITH

Jacqueline Denise Chastang Smith, 64, departed this life on August 4, 2019. Born in Baltimore, Maryland, she was the fourth of seven children. She came to Orlando with the family in 1961 and has called it home for the past 58 years.

She was a graduate of Edgewater High School, Florida Southern College, and Rollins College. She began her career in education in 1979 at Walker Middle School as a Distributive Education and Computer Science teacher and received the Teacher of the Year Award in 1987 for her innovative teaching practices. As a pioneer in technology, she became one of the first Technology Support Representatives in the school system. She soon became Dean of Students and later was promoted to Assistant Principal. As an administrator who always made time to meet with students and parents about a concern, to solve a problem, or to offer praise for a job well done, Jackie was a role model to the faculty. She encouraged all who crossed paths with her to strive to be their best. Retiring after 38 years with Orange County Public Schools, her words of support and inspiration will never be forgotten.

Jackie found beauty in everyday things which was reflected by her cheerful nature. She enjoyed creating beautiful gardens at her home and found great pleasure in spending weekends at the beach with her family. She was a caring and devoted sister, wife, and mother, always striving to help and protect her loved ones. She is survived by her son Casey Smith and daughter Alexis Smith, both of Orlando; her mother Harriet Chastang, Lakeland; sisters Janine Callahan, Lakeland; Gerri Ferraro, Safety Harbor; Georgette Chastang, Conover, NC; and, brother Larry Chastang, Winter Garden; her adoring niece and faithful companion Amanda Callahan, Lakeland; and, 10 more loving nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband of 26 years, Alan R. Smith; her father, Clarence Chastang; sister Andrea Chastang, M.D.; and, brother Richard Chastang.

Jackie will be missed dearly and remembered forever by her family and friends. Her very good friends, Joan and Neftali Laboy, have been a big part of her life and will sorely miss her as well. Thank you, Jackie, for making this world a better place for all those who knew you.

A small gathering with family and close friends will be held in her honor.

I was very saddened by the news of Jackie’s passing. She was an amazing lady who had a beautiful spirit and was a wise and trusted friend. It was she who had confidence in me to take on a position I never knew I could do. I am forever grateful for that. She was direct, patient, funny, and you always knew where you stood when you walked away from her office. I pray that God will comfort you in your loss with many wonderful memories of the love you shared together. May God’s peace be with all of her family.

My most deepest condolences for Jackie's family. When I started my first job as a teacher at Walker she took me in and coached me and helped me, she showed me the way of my first steps of using technology. She was as strong as she was caring and I'm a better person and teacher because of her influence.

My deepest sympathies go out to one of the finest administrators and people I've ever had the privilege of working with.

Casey and Alexis, your mother was always very supportive to all of us and was an extended member of our own families. A number of us Vikings have lost our own mothers, myself included. We are here for you.

One thing she always teased me about was my first year at Walker in '03-'04 when she applied to become the new principal, and the position went to Jason Powell. Dr. Cuddy put me on the spot in a faculty meeting in front of the whole staff when she asked, "You worked with him at Lockhart. Is there anything you want to share?" I had 100 eyes glued to me, and Jackie later said, "I hear you're the one in the know here."

I will state right now what I said then. I wanted Jackie as much as anyone else to get the job and had no knowledge Jason ever applied for the position.

I will say a special prayer for all. Rest in Peace, Jackie. You are home with the Lord.

My deepest condolences to all of Jackie's family. As part of her Walker family, she always had time to me come in her office and vent and get all my new teacher frustrations out. She did my first evaluations and was always helpful and supportive. The world has lost a truly amazing woman and she will be greatly missed.

My deepest condolences to Casey, Alexis and the entire family. Your mother was a supportive mentor and friend during my many years at Walker Middle School, starting in 1985. I will never forget your parents’ beautiful wedding and how very proud they were of you two. Prayers for comfort at this difficult time.
