

Jim was born January 8, 1922, in Norwood N.C. He enlisted in the U. S. Army in 1942 and, during his military career, received a BA in Business Administration from the University of Maryland, and completed advanced training in the U. S. Army Ordnance School and the U.S. Army Command and General Staff College. His military career encompassed two assignments at the Pentagon in Washington, DC as well as assignments in Puerto Rico, Japan and Belgium. Jim’s foreign war service included North Africa, Corsica and Italy during WWII, and Korea and Vietnam during those wars. He received a number of commendations, including the Legion of Merit and the Bronze Star. His final assignment before moving to Florida was serving as 59th Commanding Officer at Frankford Arsenal in Philadelphia, PA. He retired in 1974 to Orlando, FL, where he lived with his wife of 65 years, Virginia. Jim was a patriotic military leader and a devoted husband, father, and friend. Jim enjoyed life and his special interests included travel, reading, history, music and especially football. He was a Mason and member of First Presbyterian Church of Orlando. No words can express how much he was loved and will be missed. He is survived by his wife, Ginny, his daughter Linda Thompson and her husband Perry, grandson James Cartee , two step grandchildren Kathy Kauchak (spouse Jim) and Greg Thompson (spouse Kim), along with their children Jimmy Kauchak, Brooke Thompson and Sydney Thompson, who all reside in Central Florida.
A Memorial service celebrating Jim’s life will be held at the chapel of First Presbyterian Church of Orlando located at 106 E. Church St., Orlando, FL 32801 on Saturday, October 22, 2011 at 11:00 AM. Committal services will be held at Woodlawn Memorial Park in Gotha, FL. at the mausoleum at 1:30 PM on Saturday the 22nd. With Full Military Honors. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial donations be made to the Salvation Army, Operation Homefront, or the First Presbyterian Church of Orlando.
