Marie W Smart, age 78, of Winter Springs, Florida, passed away peacefully in her sleep at Hospice of the Comforter in Altamonte Springs, Florida, on February 26, 2011. Originally from Mouth of Wilson, Virginia, Marie was born Wadie Marie Osborne to Brack McKee Osborne and Belzonia Spencer Osborne on January 19, 1933.
Marie was the seventh of eight children. She grew up on her family’s farm. At the age of twelve Marie contracted Polio. Because the walk to school was quite far and hilly, Marie lived for a time with neighbors who lived nearer to the school.
Marie graduated in 1950 from Lansing High School in Ashe County, North Carolina. There, she was a point guard on the girls' basketball team, an honorary member of the Monogram Club and a member of the Activity Club. She served as the senior class editor for the Lang Syne yearbook and performed in the winning play group in the county dramatics festival.
Upon graduating from high school, Marie moved to Bel Air, Maryland where her sister Wilma lived with her husband Roger. Marie attended business school, living for a time at the Lutheran women's home in order to be near the school.
In 1956 Marie married Julio Enrique "Ricky" Amador. They lived in Baltimore, Maryland, and Marie worked as a secretary while Ricky built a successful import-export business. Marie and Ricky had a daughter Susan Yvette and a son Douglas Ian. Douglas was adopted by a loving family. He reunited with Marie and her family in 1992. Marie and Ricky divorced soon after Douglas’s birth in 1966 and Marie moved with Susan to Orlando, Florida. There she worked as a secretary for Martin Marietta Corporation.
In 1968 Marie married David Lee Struebing, an engineer at Martin Marietta. Marie and David had one daughter Sandra Lee. Marie and David lived in Winter Park, Florida, El Paso, Texas, Springfield, Virginia, and London, England, before divorcing in 1976.
In 1978, Marie married Joseph W. Smart and she legally changed her name to Marie W Smart. Middle name W. She said if Harry S Truman could have S for a middle name she could have W. Marie and Joe moved to Winter Park, Florida, where Marie worked as a secretary for the Glenn W. Turner organization and Joe worked as a test engineer for Stromberg-Carlson. Joe passed away in 1986 after a long battle with colon cancer.
Marie was known for her beauty, her wit and her kindness. She had a dry and occasionaly raunchy sense of humor that was unexpected from such a graceful, loving mother and grandmother. She loved to say and do the unexpected, delighting in the responses of unsuspecting friends and family. Marie loved to cook and was famous for her Maryland crab cakes, sausage balls, and chicken cacciatore. She also loved to match wits with others, playing cards and chess whenever the opportunity arose. She was a brilliant player and a formidable opponent. Marie enjoyed going to the local Jai Alai fronton and betting on the players, taking delight in the thrill of a winning bet. She also enjoyed dabbling in the stock market as yet another opportunity to learn a complex system and use her analytical abilities to place calculated investment trades.
Marie is survived by her sister Lola, her children, Susan Struebing, Douglas Gillespie and Sandra Struebing, and her grandchildren Lori Struebing (Paul Ashton), Chelsea Talley, Brianna Taylor (Ted), Nick Keller, Will Maxey, Jenna Maxey, Caleb Struebing, Sophie Gillespie, Ben Gillespie and Destini Collier, and great-grandchildren Natalie Flores, Zion Paduano, Naomi Flores.
