He fought the good fight until he could fight no more. John passed with his wife Mary by his side. John was predeceased by his parents Josephine & John; sisters Agnes (Bob), Mary & Isabel; brothers Joe, Alex, Albert, Roy; and sisters in law Marg and Mary; brothers in law George, Tony and Vern. He will be greatly missed by his wife of 65 years, Mary and their three daughters Diane McKeen (Jim), Bev Hackewich, Debra Kenny (Bev); Grandchildren Jimi Scherer (Brad), Tyler Scherer (Samantha) and their Dad Ernie Scherer, Booker Kenny (Amanda) and Wells, Jeremy (Deb), Jyles and Daley.
John is survived by his siblings Francis, Jessie, Millie (Walter), Martin (Marlene), Bill (Alice), Gary, Ron (Bernie), Richard (Linda), Eileen (Randy) and numerous nieces and nephews. John was born in Southey, the third of seventeen children. He worked at various jobs before starting with the CPR in 1948. Working in various towns throughout Saskatchewan, John and Mary eventually settled in Wolseley and retired in 1982. John and Mary took annual winter holidays to warm destinations in their early retirement years. John enjoyed being with his family and friends, a game of cards, a good joke and a shot of sherry – there was always time for one more game of 65. The funeral service will be held in the Chapel of Tubman Funeral Home, Wolseley on Wednesday, April 17, 2013 at 2:00 p.m., with Pastor Gerald Bruce Andersen officiating. A private family interment will take place in the Wolseley Cemetery.
