On the morning of October 8, 2025, our beloved father, Louis Eashappie “Wamnitaga… Big Eagle” born December 27, 1940, on the Assiniboine I.R., was called home to the spirit world. He is now reunited with his loving wife, Susan and all his relatives who have gone on before him. As he would have said, “they met me at the pearly gates.”
Louis was a husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, cousin, friend and son. He was a strong man, both physically and mentally. He was a hard worker his entire life, he was kind, honest and quiet. When he spoke, we listened. A private person, he raised us with respect, teaching us to be kind, to be good people and above all, to always speak the truth.
A true cowboy, Louis road broncs, broke horses and trained them to be rideable. He shared countless stories with us, especially with his older grandchildren, each of whom carries a story to tell. He was a very special man. He was a good father and grandfather and each of us shared a unique bond with him. He raised us all to be strong like him.
We honor the 84 years our father and grandfather spent on Earth and we are grateful for the time we got to spend with him. He will be truly missed.
Louis was predeceased by his wife Susan (née Owatch) Eashappie; his parents Hector Eashappie and Lena (née Kennedy) Eashappie; brother Robert “Bobby” Eashappie; nephew Russell Ryder; sisters: Agnes, Velma and Shirley (Glen) Thompson; adopted son Garnet Eashappie; granddaughters Lori Jack and Samantha Thomson and great-grandchild Shalanda.
He is survived by his eldest sister Cora (Bill) Thomson; sons: Cary (Nora), Kevin (Connie), Jesse and Jorge; daughters: Starla, Kelly, Brandee (Kevin) and Tracy (Jay); adopted daughters Reagan (Fred) and Brenda Bird; granddaughters: Twinkle (Perry), Colinda (William) Tanner and Shelly (Dean) Tanner. The grandchildren they raised and cared for include: Bailey, Delta, Terrence, Taliegha, Aiden, Stone, Paden and Damien. He leaves behind 27 grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
We would also like to acknowledge our dad’s favorite brother-in-law Merk Owatch and his two favorite nephews Leach and Jingles Thompson.
A wake for Louis will be held Tuesday, October 14, 2025 at 4:00 p.m. in Carry The Kettle First Nation Community Hall, Carry The Kettle First Nation.
