He was a man of faith with an appreciation for a wide variety of music who loved to cheer on the Green Bay Packers. He was a beloved husband, father, “boppa,” brother, uncle, neighbor and friend to many.
Marty was a native of Rice Lake, Wisconsin who shared his love of 50s rock-n-roll with others over the airwaves as a weekend DJ at WJMC during his high school years. On his 17th birthday, he joined the 32nd division of the Wisconsin National Guard. Marty was a proud 1957 graduate of Rice Lake High School and 1961 graduate of the University of Wisconsin Eau Claire, where he earned a B.S. in secondary education.
After receiving his degree, he began teaching science at Cameron (WI) High School, and shortly thereafter was called to active duty with the National Guard during the Berlin Crisis. He returned to teaching in the fall of 1962 and received National Science Foundation fellowships at the College of St. Thomas and University of the South before leaving teaching for a long career with 3M.
Marty worked at 3M for 30+ years in training, human resources and college recruiting. He was passionate about helping recent graduates find the right career match and spent many hours advising and mentoring young job seekers. Marty volunteered with the University of Minnesota’s Carlson School of Management and served on the board of directors at Century College Foundation. Marty was a longtime volunteer on the evangelism committee at St. John Lutheran Church who enjoyed sharing his faith with others.
Marty was an avid consumer of local TV news, and relished watching news stories shot and edited by his son, an award-winning KSTP-TV photojournalist. He also delighted in sharing his love of his Norwegian heritage with his grandchildren, and was never one to pass up a helping of lutefisk or corny jokes with them.
He is survived by his loving wife of 57 years, Jane; son, Jason (Janine) Hanson; grandchildren, Sharla and Anders Hanson; sisters, Kathryn Buelow and Betty (Bob) Klungness; sister-in-law, Linda Stack; nephews, Donovan (Rae) Emery, Chris (Diana) Emery; nieces, Deborah Emery, Karen (Jim) Schmitz, Kathy (Steve) VanGuilder and Rhonda (Mike) Knight; as well as many cousins and friends.
He was proceeded in death by his parents, Hjalmer and Alma Hanson; and two nephews, Craig Emery and John Carr.
The family is grateful for all the relatives, friends, neighbors and caregivers who helped Marty (and his cherished Jane) throughout their many years in Park Hills and Powers Lake in Woodbury, and the more recent support they received at Johanna Shores in Arden Hills.
A funeral service will be held on Friday, Aug. 27 at 11 a.m. at St. John Lutheran in Woodbury (1975 St. John’s Drive, Woodbury MN 55129) with visitation one hour prior.
Please plan to wear a mask and bring a favorite memory of Marty to share.
Memorials are preferred to St. John Lutheran Church or Union Gospel Mission.
