Jon Floyd Conley was born in Carlton, Minnesota on December 28,1935. He spent his childhood in Wrenshall, Minnesota. An energetic, smart kid who loved sports, he graduated from Wrenshall high school and went on to earn his bachelor’s degree in education from the University of Minnesota Duluth. While a student at UMD, he was proud to participate on the basketball and football teams.
He had a wonderful beginning to his career as a coach and teacher in the small town of Tony, Wisconsin. He formed strong friendships, remaining in touch with the people he met that year and planning to attend their 65th class reunion later this summer.
He married his high school sweetheart Alice Pfeffer in Sept of 1957. They raised 4 children and built a wonderful, busy life together, with many of their years spent in Cornell, Wisconsin. Coach Conley was the physical education teacher, coach and summer recreation director.
Jon was highly motivated to continue his education and completed his Master’s degree at the University of Wisconsin Stout. He became a guidance counselor, working with high school kids, and he later became a high school principal in Ellsworth, Wisconsin.
Jon decided to retire at 55 after he developed serious heart issues. He had already worked in education for over 30 years. In his retirement years, he enjoyed traveling, golfing, gardening, time with family and grand-dogs, and spending the winters in sunny Florida.
He eventually settled near New Richmond, Wisconsin. He bought a 2 ½ acre field in the country, where he built a home and planted over 50 apple trees. He added a schnauzer named Sami, who was his constant companion for many years.
Jon was grateful for his family, friends and enjoyed the interactions with people he met along the way. He will live on in our hearts.
He was preceded in death by his parents Ellen (Jensen) and Floyd Conley; sisters Carol (Lyle) Bradley, Mary Ellen (Dale) Morey, Camilla (Wiley) Johnson; brother Jerry (Jean/Glad); sons Bruce and Gregory; nieces Valerie Johnson and Dawn Fassbender; former wife Alice.
