I first met Lyle several years ago when he and Gwen joined the ALPHA class I was teaching at our church.  I came to know and really like him.  I respected his comments and willingness to share and let us know what he was thinking.

I was able to spend more time with Lyle after he found out he had cancer.  I also got to know some of his family.  I found out what a very special person he was. He was always  kind and considerate to all he came into contact with.  I miss our times together.  However, I do look forward to spending more time with him when I get to heaven.

It is with much sadness that I heard of Lyle's passing. I hold so many fond memories of our times together at Zion Lutheran Church.   We used to spend much time with both Lyle and Sharon.  In fact, my son was named after Lyle and another Luther Leaguer from Zion.   He was a wonderful man and a fantastic friend.  I am sad we lost touch over the past few years. Love , light & blessings to you Lyle as you are making your transition to the next great place. I am grateful to have had you in my life for the short time I knew you & wish I could have seen you more recently. Thank you for being my willing practice subject for massage school, I know you looked forward to your massages & I enjoyed spending that time with you. Even though you are gone I know you are watching over your family with a smile on your face....my thoughts & prayers are with the rest of the family as well. The memories will always be there and we will all meet again eventually....many blessings to Lyle & our family!

So long Uncle Lyle. You're off to a better place. I'll always have fond memories of Lyle from back in the days when he lived along the Mississippi. Trips to Yellowstone and the BWCA, long bike rides, and many deep late night conversations. I'll never forget his willingness to offer me free room and board (including all the Blatz Light I could drink!!) when I ran low on funds in my college days. He was kind to a fault and will be missed by everyone he touched.

We send our sympathy to Lyle's family.  He was a great friend of Greg's while they attended Minnesota School of Business and the friendship continued as their lives went different directions. The memories are with us forever.

You remembered and addressed me as such after we had our little cousin get-together last summer. It was great to meet you when I was visiting from Georgia.  Me and my family loved Lyle very much and enjoyed spending time with him and including him with our family.  We had many cribbage games we enjoyed together and he really knocked my socks off the last time we played.  I thank you very much for my very very special memento of Lyle.  It will always be sitting in front of me as a reminder of the dearest friend my dad and family had from the Golden Living Center.  God has taken that great smile and is enjoying it as much as we all did when Lyle was here with us.  God be with you and your families at this time.  Daughter of Dale Hopkins.

Lyle was a good friend to my Dad @ GLC-LR.  Our entire family always enjoyed visiting with him, and loved it when he joined us to see "Barefoot Becky" and attened our family gatherings when we had them in the dining room.
I hope my Dad and our family were able bring as much joy to him as he gave us!

I have so many fond memories of get togethers at your Mississippi River home and so many great bike rides. Long bike rides! I just looked at a video of our Christmas get together in 1989. There you are at the stove making rosettes with Harry. I will really miss your gentlenness - friendship and kindness and will treasure your friendship in my heart forever.

Irresistible Peanut Butter Cookies
     ~made by Lyle that no one could ever duplicate (he said his secret was in the baking...)
3/4 cup SKIPPY (had to be!)Creamy Peanut Butter
1/2 stick CRISCO Butter Flavored Shortening Sticks
1 1/4 cups firmly packed brown sugar
3 tbsps milk
1 tbsp vanilla extract
1 large egg
1 3/4 cup flour
3/4 tsp baking soda
3/4 tsp salt
Heat oven to 375 degrees. Combine peanut butter, shortening, brown sugar, milk and vanilla in a large bowl.Beat at medium speed of electric mixer until well blended. Add egg. Beat just until blended.  Combine flour, baking soda and salt. Mix just until blended. Drop by rounded measuring tablespoonsful of dough 2inches apart onto greased baking sheet. Flatten slightly in a crisscross pattern with tines of fork. Bake one baking sheet at a time for 7-8 minutes (some where in this step was Lyle's secret).  Cool 2 minutes on baking sheet.
Lyle's cookies were ALWAYS soft and chewy!!!

Lyle - Dear friend. You will be missed. We had so many fun times together hanging out at your place on the Mississippi River and I am so sorry that we lost touch. While your Dad & Mom were 'Zion Church' friends of my Dad & Mom they allowed me to somehow envision my parents as somewhat cool because they had friends like that - one of my first babysitting jobs was taking care of you two at that cabin-like home on the Mississippi in Brooklyn Park. Your Dad helped me begin my transition to manhood when he hired me in my early teens to 'help him' do some chores around that home, although I'm sure he could have completed those chores more efficiently himself. Later on in High School Lyle asked me to play with him on the Zion Men's, and Orbit Glass basketball teams; something that allowed me to believe that I could be cool enough to hang out with all those older hip guys. In so many ways, those mentoring times with your dad provided me with the idea that I could be a cool, self confident, and yet humble man all at the same time - just like your Dad. To me, the key to anyone's success is, "Did you leave the world a better place?" Your Dad did. He will be missed.
