Georgia Mae Carter was born on July 10, 1920 in Jacksonville, Florida to George and Tina Williams. At an early age Georgia was sent to live with an Aunt in Atlanta, Georgia. She then moved to Tampa, Florida to live with her brother, where she met and married Richard Carter. To this union were born three sons: Richard Jr., Henry and Theodore Carter.
In 1947 Georgia Mae and her family moved to New York City. At first they resided with her brother-in-law, Chester Carter until they moved into their own apartment in the Queensbridge Houses in Long Island City. They were one of the first black families in that community.
Georgia Mae worked as a Domestic Worker and a Health Care Provider. She was a mother of all mothers, she worked 18 hours a day to provide for her sons. Although she worked long hard hours, she always kept her head up high, had an encouraging word to share with others along with her wonderful smile. Georgia Mae had a wonderful sense of humor and knew how to bring joy to any room she was in. She loved collard greens and cornbread and boy could she cook!
She believed the word of God above all things and she was committed to her personal relationship with the Lord. She believed the word that said “Train up a child in the way that they should go and when they are old they shall not depart”. One of her greatest joys was when she witnessed her son Henry honored as the first living African American to ever have a City Hospital named after him. The Henry J. Carter Specialty Hospital & Nursing Facility was opened in New York City in 2013.
Georgia Mae was called home to be with her Lord and Savior on Friday, March 28, 2014.
