

father, grandfather and husband, passed away quietly at his residence
on Tuesday, January 11, 2022. Gunars was born November 23,1927 in
Riga, Latvia to his parents Arnolds and Elza Neimanis. At the age of
17 he lost his right leg in a wartime injury and in 1948, he emigrated
to the United States with his parents and sister Izolda. In 1963 he
married his wife Elizabeth Hernandez and raised two children, Arnold
and Ingrid. For over 30 years he worked as a machinist at General
Grinding in The Bronx. Despite his disability, Gunars was an avid
golfer who especially loved playing the Black Course at Bethpage. He
also competed in various tournaments conducted by the National Amputee
Golf Association, often winning awards and trophies for his
achievements. In 2013 he was predeceased by his wife of 50 years,
Elizabeth Neimanis.
In light of his hardships, he always showed great strength to not only
persevere, but to make his life a good one and to enrich the lives of
his family and friends. The most profound aspect of his life was his
strong and loving character. Gunars was kind and gentle, yet firm when
he needed to be. He was a wonderful provider, always supportive and
encouraging, and a role model to his children and grandson. He was
physically and mentally tough with a heart of gold.
Gunars is survived by his son Arnold Neimanis of Manhasset, NY, his
daughter Ingrid Neimanis-McNamara and his grandson, Blake Michael
Gunars McNamara of Woodside, NY.
