

Mrs. Johnie L. Johnson beloved daughter of Christopher and Clara Johnson was born in South Carolina on December 21, 1919. She graduated from South Carolina State College and receive her Master Degree in Education in New York.
Johnie relocated to New York. She resided in Astoria Houses for forty-five years. She was an active member of the Astoria Houses Tenant Organization. Mrs. Johnson was instrumental in the establishment of Martin DePorres Community Center and the Hallet Cove Childcare Development Center. She later became Director of Martin DePorres Center which the name was change to NAACP Day Care Center. Mrs. Johnson was also an activist for the NAACP Chapter.
Mother Johnie Johnson became a member of Canaan A.M.E. Church of Astoria in 2001 and remained a faithful member as long as she was able. Mother Johnie's greatest joy was the time she spent with her family, friends, and neighbors. She had a beautiful mind, that was engaging and encouraging to others.
On August 1, 2013, Mother Johnie L. Johnson was called by the highest power known to return to the place from where she came. She is back with the Lord. Preceding her in death was her husband, Robert C. Johnson, son Charles Johnson and daughter Daphne A. Johnson
Mrs. Johnson has left a wonderful legacy for all who knew her. She leaves to cherish fond and loving memories, a son John Robert Johnson, ten grandchildren, two of whom she raised after the death of her daughter, Rayshawn and Jon Ray, nine great grandchildren, a host of nieces and nephews, and two very special friends,
Mrs. Barbara Place and Mrs. Ann Dawson.
