My grandfather was a storyteller. I always told him to write a book. We spent hours recounting his memories—his childhood on the farmlands of Spain where his love of dogs began, his travels to countries like Norway and Germany, and how they eventually brought him to New York, where he met and fell in love with my grandmother. She saw him as worldly, hardworking, and shy. He told his stories with humor and drama, often sharing tales of friends in the community he quietly helped. And oh, how we laughed.

He was many things: a sailor, a pilot, a mechanic. Brilliant in business and with people, he was as good a listener as he was a talker. He gave me endless encouragement, always remembered what I told him, and asked for updates with genuine interest. He planted the seeds of my wanderlust and taught me to stand firm in demanding respect.

Jose had the mouth of a sailor (because he was one!). He hated photos, didn’t like to dance, and wasn't into small talk. But he was also deeply loving and sweet. He lit up when my mom, sister, and I visited. I’ll miss the way he held my hand across the table, and every time someone answers “How are you?” with “Surviving.” My grandfather was a survivor—through early loss, seminary school, service in the Spanish Army and French Foreign Legion, and cold nights in the Merchant Marines.

In recent years, he faced illness with remarkable resilience. When we asked the secret to a long life, he slammed his hand on the table and said: “God.” He was strong, proud, and kind. It’s an honor to call him my inspiration, role model, and friend. I invite you to carry his spirit forward. We were each touched by his presence. Thank you for being part of his remarkable life.
