Luz T. Medina passed away, surrounded by her daughters, during the early morning hours of April 26, 2024. She was born in Isabela Puerto Rico to Silverio Moya Samalot and Maria Siverio Figueroa and grew up with her brothers Manuel, Jose (both who pre-deceased her) and Julio Moya. In her twenties, Luz moved to New York City, married her beloved husband, Jose, and together they raised four children.
Luz loved New York City and lived a good majority of her “100” years on Roosevelt Island. Known as “Lucy” to many of her friends, she hosted a daily coffee hour for her island friends. Anyone visiting was treated to the experience of witnessing an interesting mix of numerous nationalities at her table. These gatherings represented a microcosm of the different cultures in the melting pot that is New York and made Roosevelt Island a special place to live--in the heart of the Big Apple.
Luz was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother. She was always kind, generous and welcoming--everyone loved her. Family for her was everything in life. She had special bonds with her brothers and her large and loving extended family. All recall the great impact she had on their lives.
Her beloved husband, Jose, passed away in 2017 after 65 years of marriage. Luz spent her remaining years living close to her daughters in New England in the Compass Memory Unit at “Cornerstone at Hampton” in Hampton, New Hampshire. While she missed New York City, she enjoyed the slower pace of life in New England and loved the weekly drives along the beautiful coast of New Hampshire. The Medina family would like to thank the “Angels” at Cornerstone for all the love, care and attention they gave to Luz. They will be forever grateful for making her remaining years so special and peaceful.
Luz leaves behind her four children Sylvia Hadley (Douglas), Maritza Medina (Ernesto), Jose Medina (Stefan) and Albert Medina (Janet), her five grandchildren, Rachel and William Hadley, Austin and Allison Medina and Matthew Lugo as well as her only surviving brother Julio Moya and countless nieces, nephews, God-children, in addition to a myriad of other family and friends.
A reposing for Luz will be held Friday, May 3, 2024 from 2:00 PM to 7:00 PM at Thomas M.Quinn & Sons Funeral Home, 41-45 58th Street, Woodside, NY 11377. A mass of Christian burial will occur Saturday, May 4, 2024 from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM at St Rita's Roman Catholic Church, 36-25 11th St, Long Island City, NY 11106. An interment will occur Saturday, May 4, 2024 from 11:45 AM to 12:15 PM at St. Michael's Cemetery - Mausoleums/Cremation Niches, 7202 Astoria Blvd S, Elmhurst, NY 11370.
