Alice Dean Felton died in Atlanta on January 20, 2017, shortly before her 96th birthday. She was born on March 19, 1921, in Woodstock, GA. Alice’s parents were Alice Wellons Dean and Linton Albert Dean (widely known as “Waddy”). She attended public schools in Woodstock and Marietta and graduated from Bessie Tift College in Forsyth, GA. While working at the Coca-Cola Company in Atlanta, Alice met John H. Felton. They married February 7, 1956. She moved in to John’s Ansley Park home and became a mother to John’s children, Elizabeth Hitch Felton (“Beth”), John, Jr., and William Robinson Felton II (“Bill”), and gave birth to their son, Augustus Dean Felton (“Dean”). Alice was actively employed for her entire life until retirement age, at which time she was a member of the editorial staff of the Home Mission Board of the Southern Baptist Convention. Alice had a special devotion to her hometown of Woodstock. After her father passed away, Alice became the owner of the premises in which Waddy had operated Dean’s Store in Woodstock. She took great care to preserve the store and its contents, including the wood stove, for continued use as an informal retired men’s meeting place and now as the Woodstock Visitors Center. As a victim of childhood polio which did not limit her morale or achievements, Alice was dedicated to the cause of others of similar experience. Above all, Alice was devoted to family and friends with whom she unfailingly and unselfishly shared her intelligence, wit, gracious charm, and worldly means. Alice was a long-time member of St. Mark United Methodist Church. She was predeceased by her husband, John, by her sister, Elizabeth Drinkard, by her children John, Jr., and Beth, and by Beth’s husband, E. Powell Williams. Alice is survived by her sons Bill and Dean, by Bill’s wife, Sharon, by Beth’s children, Powell Williams, Jr., Allison Williams Tibe, and Lisa Williams Jonczyk, by Bill and Sharons daughters, Heidi Cozzens and Cindy Todd, by her nephews, Dean, Frank and Jimmy Drinkard, and by numerous grandchildren, nieces, and nephews. The family is grateful to caregivers, Constance Walker and Kay Krull. Memorials may be sent to St. Mark United Methodist Church or to the Atlanta Post Polio Association. The funeral service will be Saturday, January 28, 2017 at 2:00pm in the chapel of Woodstock Funeral Home. The family will receive friends for a luncheon and fellowship one hour prior to the service. The arrangements for Mrs. Felton have been entrusted to Woodstock Funeral Home, Woodstock, GA.
